40" MTRs on 71

scored a set of 40" MTRs today. Also scored a 1" body lift for cheap. Need body mounts and put those on and some fender trimming. Thinking of parting out the truggy and putting the 454, th400, doubler, d60, and 14ff in the 71 now

Cutting on the yellow lines won't be enough with your current lift if your going to wheel it hard and I suspect/hope you will.

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

Alot depends on how flexy your suspension is but...

The mods I'd recommend before the hard core wheeling trips would be these:
*Remove the inner fenders, they're going to hit/rub.
*Have at least 8" of lift along with the metal trimming.
*Rear drive shaft will want to have a double cardon joint for the amount lift needed.
*Front shaft will be happier with 1410 yolks and at least a 12" slip joint in it.
*Beefing up the front axles won't hurt either, going to some 4340 shaft's and upgraded u-joint's is worth thinking about.
*Rear disc's could be on the 'later' list.
*Some sort of hydro steering, assist or full w/cooler.
*High steer kit.
*Quality diff covers.

Installing the 454, doubler and th-400 should now be at the top of the list!

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

Vt has 42s and has been tweaking all the bugs from the po and just generally making his rig offroad worthy over this summer.Kurt, why not post a picture or two to give an idea of the required "loss of sheetmetal" required. It always seems to be more than you think and I know yours has seen the "trail-test".
That thing looks tough. How much lift on it now?I want to see your truggy.

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

Currently I have 4" springs in front with a zero rate moving azle forward 1.5" and one inner fender is already MIA. Rear is 56" springs with a shakle flip. If I put my truggy stuff in it then t will also aquire my d60 front with crossover steering and hydro assist 4.56 gears and locright and my rear 14FF with 4.56s detroit and disk brakes. I put together a 1350 driveshaft with 8" slip on the rear with its current config and have a 1350 dodge cummins CV shaft to make work for a front. I also scored a 1" BL yesterday too so with that and new body mount I bet I will get another 1.5" of fender clearance being half the body mounts are gone and the rest are smashed down. Might also put 52s in front. I ran my 83 shortbox with 40s on only 4" and hacked fenders for about a year. Rubbed cab was the only thing at stuff/ turn

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

Sounds awesome!I ran 13.50/37 Swampers w/8" rims on a `71 w/4" springs & 3" body lift and that cleared fine w/o cutting sheetmetal. On another`71,I ran 14.50/37x16.5 Armstrong Extra Tractions w/9.75" rims w/4" springs and cut the body like you show and that cleared fine, too. You should be fine,I think. You can always cut a little more if you need, right?Keep us up on the progress.

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

the cage needs to be a little taller and go as far back as possible in my opinion. hoop style safari look or big ass halo trendy look. maybe a little bob would be cool but the oem butt needs to be reused. plate it at the firewall and do a engine/rad cage.
damn dude you got a lot of work to do you better get busy

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

yeah, that was just a quick drawing. Cage will be done the road as getting drivetrain done is priority. I have a fastrac on order so basically I will build the cage as large as possible to fit inside the soft top. Tube work isn't a problem for me as this project is something to keep me wheeling as I finish my buggy. Don't wanna bob this one either like I did my old cab truck (well tappered the ends in) so I can haul 4 people and camping gear etc. I will have the buggy for the extreme stuff unless I get a good offer to sell it then I will uber trick the 71 k5 out...

Re: 40" MTRs on 71

How long are you prepared to wait for that top?I guess you can wait since you`re making a project of it.I ordered one for my`90 in July and still waiting. With winter coming,I`m cancelling the top.I`ll be selling it before spring.I figured I`d get a little fall use and it would help it`s appeal when going on sale.I doubt it would add to the price, though.STC needs to get it together.
