Use a NGK BCPR6ES, they will fit your head, and have the smaller 5/8 wrench flat making it easier to work with, a gift if you run headers.

Re: Spark plugs
NGK's are .. ironically .. a good plug for Chev small blocks. I don't think they'd be any different in a big block. Some LT-1 guys I know swear by them, and I've gotten good service out of multiple sets in my 480,000 mile 350 powered Caprice.

Re: Spark plugs
I used to run AC , but there hard to find and exspensive so i switched to Autolite , but they don't seem to last very long , i'll try the NGK , i run them in just about everything else anyway . Looks like we get one more race day this Sunday , so a new set of plugs is in order . Supposed to be sunny and cool , last chance to run a 14.25 , lol.

Re: Spark plugs
I've been running them in my Z71 and 67. They are cheap as dirt and work great. A lot of the fellers over at Gm-trucks.com swear by them and Taylor wires. So far they've performed well in my trucks.

Re: Spark plugs
NGK is a great plug. AC and Autolite are also decent plugs. I think aside from picking a good brand, getting the correct heat range is as important.

Re: Spark plugs
Me personally, ac delco exclusive. But autolites are pretty good. But what ever you do stay away from BASH ( exscuse me bosh). Me and mechanic friend where always asked what we thought of bosh and we always replied bash. They would ask us what do you mean by that. And we said that the only good thing bosh was good for was to throw them at a brick wall adn watch them bash! Sorry just had to get that out.

Re: Spark plugs
O.K. all you plug experts , my owners manual says to use AC 43-N , i've been using Autolite 403 . I couldn't find any NGK instock in town , so i went over to the AC Delco distributor , he sold me R43XLS , said there a direct cross over cuz 43-N doesn't exist any longer . The R43XLS appear to be longer than the Autolite 403 , did i get the right plugs ? Sorry for rambling .
Comments anyone ? Tks ....................................... 409

Re: Spark plugs
The longer the plug the cooler heat range of the plug. The AC Delco 43 sounds like the right plug. The 44 is common but if you have a little more umph in the motor it should be fine. I wouldn't go any hotter though unless you're going to be standing on all the time.

Re: Spark plugs
You can probably get away with running a touch more timing with the 43. I think I got those in my Caprice, one of the few plugs I've put in that hasn't caused the car to ping... and it's been pinging for 250k miles despite the plug type. Too bad one of the 43's has been missing randomly at idle since I put them in. :P Best luck I had was an NGK plug that was one heat range colder than what the car called for. Electrodes stuck out a bit farther, but it didn't affect anything.
I wish they still made the AC Rapidfires. Those plugs were kickass when they first came out. Then they changed them, and they kind of sucked, and then they cancelled them. Make sure that gap is right, too! I heard from somebody that Bosch work well in Chryslers and some foreign cars, like Mercedes. I put a set in the Voyager, and yeah, they seem to be working well. Anything is better than the Champion platinums that were in it, though. As for GM's, Bosch does SUCK ASS in them. Speaking of which, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER BUY CHAMPIONS. Apparently, forever ago, they were the best. All my dad would ever buy. But since I started changing plugs almost 20 years ago, they've always sucked.

Re: Spark plugs
Most older V8's I've come across take a .035 gap. Then again, most took the R-45 plug. Should be listed with the plug type, wherever you found that.

I'll try to get you the number of the A/C plugs in my 396 tonight. I think they are 45's.

Re: Spark plugs
Advance Auto's website says R43XLS @ .035" gap. I still *highly* recommend the NGK V-power, plug number GR5, also @ .035" gap. It's also listed on the site, with a barrage of other plugs, of course.

Re: Spark plugs
Thanks everyone . I ended up installing the AC 43's @ .035 . I couldn't find the NGK's but i'll order some shortly . This sunday is the last race day here , winters coming . On monday we're diving into the spare 396 , it's a 67 Camaro 325 horse , 98cc closed chamber engine , don't know much more than that , hopefully it has some nice internals . That will be my engine for next year . I'm going to try and run Super street , high 12's / low 13's . That's about all i can afford with kids in college , lol.
