2001 Silverado 2500 Gas Gauge

This has been goin' on for awhile now, my gas gauge fluctuates between empty and full no matter how full the tank may be. After I fill the tank, the gauge jumps back and forth as if someone is plugging and unplugging the censor. My brother had a 2000 Silverado and said his did the same thing.

Anybody know what the problem or solution is?? Thanks.

It's your fuel sending unit. The earlier trucks had a lot of the defective sending units. The good news is that it comes with a new fuel pump. The bad news is that the module is pretty pricey, around $400 or so without labor.

Thanks, so it looks like I'm just gonna have to deal with it. Good news is after about 3/4 of a tank it quits doing it. Thanks again.

It can quit doing it after your fuel level drops. There are numerous contacts in a "fan" shape, so it may just be the first few contacts. I just replaced the fuel pump/sending unit in my Suburban my self...can be done if you take the time and have the patience.

Generally the easiest way to get to the sending unit is to take the bed loose and get it from the top. As these trucks get older, I bet a lot of people will be using the trip odometer a lot more.
