Aux Fuel Tank
Does any one have a picture of an aux fuel tank for a 72 longbed truck? It can be installed or uninstalled. Also how much fuel does it hold?
Thanks |

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
No pictures aye?
Does anyone know where the tank is usually mounted? Does it fill through a wheel opening? Is the aux tank a factory option or an aftermarket add on? Last edited by Texasdeere; 10-07-2006 at 06:57 PM. |

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
there were stock ones, with a filler pipe stickin out the bed side, normally towards the front on the drivers side, but recently saw one listed on the SPID label and it was on the rear portion of the drivers side bed.
there were dealer installed ones (some recent discussion on if they were dealer installed or aftermarket...either way) that was on the driver, or both driver and passenger sides, and had a square stainless door with a lock. they can easily be removed... I did it on my first truck, a few bolts, cut some hose, and let it fall. |

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
I had two tanks on my longbed ,one on driver side and one on passenger side. They were just behind the cab in front of rear wheels. Each had an access door and each held 17.5 gallons. They were aftermarket add ons.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
Mine has one 20 gal tank on either side. The fillers are in the wheel wells. Let me know if you need pics.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
Here is some photos I got off the board a few years back of the tanks. I think they came off the parts board. These look like the same ones that are on my green and white. I wish they worked. Plan on reactivating them one year. Hopefully?

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
Thanks a bunch guys. The truck I am looking to buy, has the valve on the floor by the drivers side of the bench seat, but no hoses or tank anywhere and no openings in the bed either. Supposedly the tank is around the shop somewhere, but I dont know what it looks like to claim it.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
Sounds like it had the ones with the filler in the wheel well. My control valve was in the same position until I removed it. Frozen and stripped.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
Aarons72s,
Those are the same tanks I had , could not give them away, wish I had kept them. Do you think they could be adapted for floats? bart

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
When i eventually drop them I plan to have holes cut in them for those universal sending units like what they sell thru lets say JC Whitney. I am pretty sure they will fit. It is just not a top priority right now. I am also plannig to install a small gauge pod for individual gauges and put in electrical tranfer valves. To me valve under seats suck! But we are talking a long way off. My dream eventually for my green and white is to have overdrive( 2004r), good running 350, all 3 fuel tanks- posibly add a fourth- the blazer tank- so I can make it from okc to Indinapolis with out stopping, ie 800 miles without refueling. I have been trying for the past 5 years to get my orange truck done. It has ate most of my money. Especially since she came from Indianna.

I dropped my tank, emptied all the gas, filled it with water (yeah I'm a chicken) and drilled a hole in the top. I mounted the gauge that comes with it knee-knocker style under my heater controller. It sure is nice knowing how much fuel is in there. 800 miles without stopping? That may be doable. Lets say you some how get up to 15mpg on the road with the overdrive. 800 / 15 = 53.3 gallons. If you keep the seat tank, install a saddle tank on the drivers side, and put in a Blazer tank with the filler on the drivers side, you'd get 57 +/- gallons of capacity. That would get you there. With a touch of a reserve. I had a buddy with a '76 with the tanks on each side. You don't want that situation. It sucks filling the tank on the other side. Most people at gas stations aren't that patient to allow you to flip your truck around and fill the other side.

Re: Aux Fuel Tank
mrein3 thanks. I do have both saddle tanks- driver and passenger. The only tank mine doesent have is the blazer tank, yet. My trip of about 800 miles is esentially from okc to indinapolis. All interstate. That is where we are originally from and all are family lives back there. I would like to take the truck one day up there and I have a thing about stopping. Right now when we go back we do it in about 11 to 12 hours but that is with stopping for fuel twice and bathrooms. The one I hate stopping fo is gas, especially in illinois and around st louis. I dont use the rest rooms, I somewhat have the nickname camel on road trips but everyone else in my family has to stop constantly. And if I take the truck it will only be me. Plus if I take road trips elsewhere I know I am good to go anywhere.
