Anyone have engineering diagram or measurements - 72 leaf spring rear?

Hi:

I'm trying to order "crate" rear end for my 1972 project. DTS can build a shortened Dana 60 that is built to the hilt. Only problem is that I need a crapload of measurements for it. He said, "You can't give me too much info."

They have the dimensions / plans for the trailing arm trucks...challenge is they don't for a leaf spring rear. What's different? Anyone have any engineering blueprints/drawins of the stock leaf rear w/ dimensions? Know where I could get? I'd hate to screw up measuring..and I know how I am.

Thanks guys.

Re: Anyoine have engineering diagram or measurements - 72 leaf spring rear?

While not really what you are looking for, thought I'd share:
  • '67-'72 leaf spring truck 12-bolts (4x4 and 4x2) have non-staggered shocks.
  • '67-'72 4x4 trucks have 2" wide spring perches 41" centerline to centerline and bump stop provisions on frame.
  • '67-'72 4x2 trucks have 2" wide spring perches 43" centerline to centerline and bump stop provisions on rearend.
  • According to the Hollander interchange the '70-'72 axles on GM 12-bolts are 31-11/32" long and the '67-'70 are 30-1/4" ('70 is a split year).
  • '73-up 12-bolts (4x4 and 4x2) have spring perches 43" centerline to centerline, bump stops on frame, staggered shocks, and 2.5" wide spring perches.

Re: Anyoine have engineering diagram or measurements - 72 leaf spring rear?

Actually that's a good start. Thank you for sharing.

Basically I'd like to confirm measurements for my leaf spring housing/axle/rear if possible rather than "make them up" with a measuring tape. Due to the odd shape it's not easy to measure, especially with it in the truck.

Do you have measurements on the shock mounts by any chance? or overall width?

Thanks again.

Re: Anyone have engineering diagram or measurements - 72 leaf spring rear?

I hopped under there and did my best. Here's what I came up with:

42.5" Center to Center for leaf spring perches, NOT 43" (Clearly not 43")

28" Center to Center for leaf spring rear shock perches

34.5" Center to Center for bump stops (welded to rear housing)

Now just have to figure out how to get accurate outside of drum to outside of drum measurement.

Hope this helps someone...if anyone has the outside drum to outside drum measurements for me to compare to that would be huge.

Thanks!
