I think that is a 479 ci engine. They have a ton of torque and for performance they are capable of 12's, but require some major$$$ to get there.

Offer them $100 and go from there. Dont use words like "maybe" on your offer, and be firm.

I had a 67 convertible when I was in college in the late 80s. Wish I still did. It was a monster. You've never seen a trunk that big.

I remember the exhaust being weird and difficult ($$$) to have fixed. Tires were tough too. Outside of that I think all I ever replaced was a broken motor mount. Parts were plentiful. Mine had very little rust on the body itself, but the front bumpers were rusted about through when I got it. It was tough to find a replacement. Perhaps this is the same type flaw as rockers on our trucks.

my uncle had a 69 deville convertible, very cool cars, every option known to man. This one had a 455, and some heavy damage to the body, along with alot of bondo that was falling out from everywhere, the motor was stuck and the top was bad, sold for $125 when we had his estate auction.

In the earlier 60s, cad ran a 390,& a 429. Later came the 472 & 500 (i think 68,but not positive on the year). The 500 first came out in the Eldo(1970?),then was later used in the Devilles. 368,425,472,&500 are of the same eng family,(cams, dist,& such interchange). 368& 425 are smoggers that came after 76....last yr of the big ones for GM in the pass car........69 longhorn

The 368 is a good doner for an aluminum single plane intake...as long as it is not the 8-6-4 version.
"68 sounds about right...maybe '67. The 500 was unsed in '75 and 76 in all the large cars if I am not mistaken.
I am about to get all the big block caddy info I can get my hands on. Could be fun.

That sounds right on the yrs Longhornmail(75-76 on the big cars). The 425 is a decent engine also, but bigger is better!!! I was gonna build a 512......till the wifey found my scratch pad with parts & prices! She went APE SH*T! hehe. I have a book,BIG INCH CADILLAC,by Doc Frohmader that has a lot of tips, tricks,& build info on the Caddy engine. They are an awsome powerplant,& you gotta love the distributor clearance!.....69

My dad has a '48 caddy with the 348 (?) flathead V8. He has a 500 out of an eldorado he wants to put into it, then add a/c, power everything, etc. Should be nice, if he ever gets around to doing it.

I had 2 66 cadillac coupes. Both had the 429 engine. Great engine VERY EXPENSIVE to get rebuild parts for. I spent 500 on rod and main bearings for it. Here in Colorado, you would be able to get a running, good condition for around 1000k. They don't seem to have a very big market. The 429 was made from 64-66. (I think). Hope that helps some...

I had a 71 Coupe with a 500 in it.
It was factory.

i heard that the '70 500cid had 400hp like posted above, but later like in 75 of 76 that went down to around 200hp due to emissions and some other group of people. anyone know how to retain that origional hp?

They also changed their HP rating system, IE:
HP @ crank shaft vs. HP @ rear wheels with all acc. on.
There was a difference in power but it was not as drastic as it seemed.

Actually denny, they didn't go to at the wheel readings, but rather as the motor would sit in the car...all belts, all hoses...full pipes (including cats).
Not only did all that hurt the 500's out put#'s, but the fact that the compression ratio was severly dropped. Tehy used crappy heads, and a differant piston. 10:1 is a whole lot more than 8:1.

Yes longhornmail, not only lower compression but also with smaller cam and air pumps for emissions.
Are your sure the ratings are not at the rear wheels?
Thats what I thought but I have no factual data to back it up.
