NASCAR/RPM/moters
anybody know what kinda setups (pistons, rods, cams etc) these guys use to push 9-10,000rpm?

Id say probably a Bryant or similar crank with about a 3.335 stroke...small journal rods....probably Lentz rods.......JE or Wiseco pistons......all the ARP studs in the world........a wicked solid flat tappet cam and a matching valvetrain........If you spend it, they will spin............ We spent $36,000 on our dirt track engine and it will religiously spin 9,000 + RPM..........I just love the sound of one all cranked up!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear ya there... I used to turn wrenches for a Pro Stock (dirt) running a 350 on alcohol. We ran a TH400 with wilwood clutch cylinder(for pump pressure) and a torque tube instead of a convertor.
I gotta tell ya.. there is nothing like the sound of a alcohol engine with only a torque tube as rotating weight. 1200 to 8000 in the blip the throttle. ahh I miss working on that thing. Love seeing a 2800lb car pull the LF all the way down the back straight-a-way. |

I'd like a TPI over head cam 350, that will pull hard to 8000 and will last and be reliable. And hold up to 150 direct inject NOS shot. Um ceramic coated pistons.

How NASCAR engines live 500 miles at 9000 RPM is a secret you'll never find out. I'd say that the valvetrain in one of those motors is more expensive than any of our trucks. They are supposed to use all magnetic steel parts, but I'd say theres a lot of trick super metals we've never heard of. If you want that much power you'd be much more easier on yourself to build about a 600 ci motor.

Like Low said...valvetrain is KEY here..........they will have more tied up in this, than you could imagine............as for the engines we use...they are built somewhat the same..........use a jesel set up, instead of regular stud mounted rockers.......lighter weight parts (easier to swing).......perfect balance is also needed........a way we keep the valve springs alive longer, is the valve covers are fitting with a fogging system, that constantly fogs oil over the springs..this helps to extend the life of them.......

And, if you're not restricted to certain sizes like NASCAR is, play with the bore and stroke...big bore, short stroke engines love to rev, like the Chevy 302 (327/350 bore, 283 stroke), 348 (400 bore, 283...or is it 327? stroke), and the 377 (400 bore, 350 stroke) all love to rev.
Of course, that doesn't change the fact that you still need an ultralight valvetrain. The oversquare bottom end just takes that out of the limiting factor.

Making a engine produce power at those kind of rpms inloves having a intake system, exhaust system and valvetrain designed to work at those rpms. As far as keeping the bottom end together, its mostly done by keeping the rod/stroke ratio as close to 2:1 as possible, keeping the reciprocating asemmbly as light as possible and getting all the machining and tolerances just right. Of course dry sump oiling systems help a bit also. Thers nothing like hearing a V8 spinning to 9000+ rpms, but keep in mind that most of these engines have to spin that fast cause they dont really make any serious power below 6000 rpms anyway. Just my 2 cents worth.
