OK. I searched and couldn't find a good answer to my first ignorant question.

FWIW I have primarily played with motorcycles for the last 15 or so years. These have gravity fed fuel systems.

I have my 68 with a 307 and Rochester 2G carb. I wanted to start with a clean slate so ordered new fuel tank, sending unit and pump. All lines have been taken off and cleaned out.

QUESTION.

Do I have to prime the fuel pump or should it take off on it's own?

I will now duck and cover with my new dunce cap firmly seated on my head.

No priming necessary for the block mounted fuel pump.
You'll need something to hold the 'tongue' up while you bolt in the new pump though

OK. I give up. I assume you mean the pushrod. So, how would I accomplish this? A 3 inch ice dagger which will later melt and destroy the evidence?

i always just put wheel grease on the pushrod to keep it up in place// when disconnecting the supply line from the tank to the pump it's good to have a short piece of rubber hose to slip over it and a vise grip to pinch it with especially if the tank is full

I have yet to replace a pump and not get gas on me/the ground/you name it.

I end up spending about 20 minutes trying to get the push rod up and out of the way too. I will try whell grease, never thought of that

My 327 block has a bolt on the front face of the block that once removed accepts a longer bolt to hold the pushrod in the up position. Made it 100% easier to change the pump than it ever has before.

2nd on the wheel bearing grease. That has worked for me in the past.

Using a longer bolt is much faster and easier. You don't have to remove the plate from under the fuel pump and replace it's gasket.

If you just roll the camshaft over till the pushrod lobe is on the drivers side of the engine you can get the pump started by putting the plunger arm against the rod and holding the pump up to the engine while you start the mount bolts. I think the cam position is at zero on the dampener mark for no. 1 or else no. six.

Do all SBC's have this? I'll probably attempt this tomorrow if it stays above freezing out.

not sure...mine is a 68 SBC 327cid. good luck

I've never seen one that didn't and I've seen a lot of them. That hole was originally used for the front motor mounts on 55-57 Chevy pickups and cars.

I'm almost positive all SBC do have it... I just di an engine swap on a 98 chevy today with a 350, it even had the hole... no pump, but it had the hole.

IT'S ALIVE

I replaced the tank last Wed. Didn't get to touch her again till today.

Replaced pump and lines. Used a small screwdriver to hold the pushrod in until the pump tang was in the hole. Dumped about 3 gallons on the ground from diferrent issues.

She fired and ran like a champ. took her around the neighborhood a bit (no plates yet). Then took the wife for another lap and lost the brakes

.

Added a bit of brake fluid and drove her around in reverse for a bit and voila. Brakes.

Tomorrow I'll go for insurance and try to get her inspected. Hopefully I'll get to drive her to work a couple times before the week is out.

KY has inspections! What has this world come to!! I want to get my Indiana plates back so I can avoid all inspections in PA!
