79 Gmc 3500 Srw - Np203?
Hi guys, I am in the process of buying a 79 GMC one ton for parts. It has a dana 60 front, 14 bolt SRW rear. I looked at the xfer case, and it looks like a 203, not a 205 like I would expect. Shouldn't it have a 205? How can I id the tranny? I think it's a TH400, kind of looks like Illinois, right? But TH350s look like a square with one corner cut off, right? Thanks very much for your help.
Jeff

Another good way to ID a T400 is the vacuum modulator is towards the pass front. T350 is to the rear.

IIRC, all of the 4wd trucks with autos got the 203 case until '79, and all standards got the 205. In 80, all 4wd trucks got the 205 case, and then the half tons (at least) went to the 208 case.

another way to check for the NP 203 is engage the front hubs and try to turn. (plus lack of a 2wd-4wd shifter)

In '79 the NP205 was only available in manual tranny equipped trucks (I think).
