Question Distributor Question

I have forgotten which direction advances timing and which way retards it, can anyone help?? Also my vacuum advance is almost touching one of the runners on the intake so I can not turn it counter clockwise, was the dist. turned wrong when it was installed??? I am having power issues when under load like climbing a hill or if I step down on the pedal too fast it will cut out and die, so could the timing be too far advanced??? Also when starting it sometimes it acts like the motor turns over faster than the starter

Re: Distributor Question

i had that problem too. i installed a new manifold and when i went to time the engine it was way off. turned out to be an intake leak. i believe counter clockwise is retarding. when you removed the dist. did you mark the position your vac advance was pointing and the position of the rotor in reference with the distributor? if so and you didnt rotate the motor while it was out it should fall into the same position.

Re: Distributor Question

You can always pull the dizzy out, move the oil pump by hand, and reposition the dizzy one set of teeth towards the other direction.

Re: Distributor Question

CCW advances and CW retards the static timing. If you need to advance the timing and you can't move the distributor CCW anymore then rotate the engine until the mark on the balancer is lined up with the zero mark on the timing tab and pull the cap off the distributor and see where the rotor button points. It should be pointing at number one plug wire or number six plug wire.
If it points to number six wire then rotate the engine one revolution and re-align the marks then check the rotor button again so that it points to no. 1 then put the cap back on and if you still can't move the distributor then just rotate all the plug wires one position Clockwise and you should be set.

Here's a picture to help.

Have you put a timing light on it yet? I think you will find the timing is retarded somewhat. That is after top dead center on the timing tab. If the vacumn advance can is too close to the manifold runner to further advance it the easiest thing for you to do is to move your plug wires around one terminal if you aren't sure about removing the dist and repositioning it. Then try resetting the timing. But you've got to know where the timing is first before you do anything.

Mine was the same way I just about got it timed right but the runner would hit.I finnally pulled dist. and reset it .it was off a tooth or so but this cured the problem.

Re: Distributor Question

If you pull the distributor in the direction that the vac advance points, you will always advance the timing
