installing a corvette steering wheel?
Hello All,
New to the board. I've got a 69 GMC(396,22k) and I'd like to install a '69 Vette wood wheel. When I tried to use the vette hub, it was binding and the turn sigs wouldn't cancel. What hub do I need in order to use this wheel? Thanks. (I tried the search but didn't have any luck) |

Re: installing a corvette steering wheel?
All I know is I put one on my 72 and used the same hub as a 69 Camaro uses.

Re: installing a corvette steering wheel?
I was told to use a 67-68 camaro hub as they are a little smaller than the later ones and should match the truck steering column diameter a little better. Z10kl does your hub seem a little larger in diameter than the steering column??

Re: installing a corvette steering wheel?
I believe the newer hub is just a little larger in diameter - maybe 1/4th inch at most. It is hardly noticeable when installed. It is also not quite as tall as the early hub. I know some of those early wood wheels are dished quite abit. That combined with the taller early hub could crowd the wheel closer than stock.
I bought a reproduction early hub and had some difficulty getting it close to the collar. It did not fit nearly as close as the newer hub. I have not played with it yet to make it fit better. Describe your problem a little more in detail.

Describe your problem a little more in detail.[/QUOTE] Thanks for the reply. I tried to use the Corvette hub with the Corvette wheel on my truck. It went on OK, but when I tightened up the nut, it began to bind. The wheel would turn(with a little effort and you could feel it rubbing), but it wouldn't return to center due to binding and the signals wouldn't cancel.

Re: installing a corvette steering wheel?
I put a wood wheel on mine using the kit that comes with the wheel and it works fine. My problem is I can't get the horn to work!

have you tried pushing the steeringwheel down while pressing the hornbutton if it does work then you need to tighten the hub up a little more

Re: installing a corvette steering wheel?
12 - Sounds like the hub goes on too far. Pull the hub and see if you can see where it is rubbing. What horn contact/cancel cam are you using? Should be the one for your column. What column - tilt or non?

I'm using the stock(truck) contact/cancel with a non tilt column. I think it does either gone on too far or the inner diameter of the hub is a bit small for the column. You guys have given me an idea though. I've got an extra hub for my 72 GS455 with sport wheel. Maybe I'll give this hub a shot with the 'Vette wheel.

Re: installing a corvette steering wheel?
I ended up using my truck contact ring instead of the Camaro one because the truck one was tapered to seat the upper column bearing.
