Cool Ball Joint sizing on 1971-72 1/2 ton Front disc spindles

What are the sizes for these ball joints?
Part #s to order with and make?
How about the spindle bearing size, just for asking?

Just for kicks, I wanted to see the differences, I measured my 69 Camaro A-arms for their respective sizing and got a 1-7/8" upper and a 2" lower ball joint diameter.

Re: Ball Joint sizing on 1971-72 Front disc set-ups

This whole topic confused me, so I got the complete front end rebuild including drop spindels and disc brakes which converts the ball joints and tie rod ends to the 73 on up style.

Ball joints/tie rod ends for 73-up 1/2 ton are different than 71-72?
Just trying to educate myself here....

Just converted mine to 73-87. Yes, they are different. Easier to find too.

Re: Ball Joint sizing on 1971-72 Front disc set-ups

71/72 have the same LOWER ball joint as the 73-up, but the upper ball joint & outer tierod ends are different. To run the cheaper 73 up drop spindles on your 71-72, all you need to swap is the UPPER balljoint, & the outer tierod end. Best of luck(hope that helps) L

Re: Ball Joint sizing on 1971-72 Front disc set-ups

So, is it the pin diameter that changes in 73? and/or does the upper ball joint diameter change with it as well?

Re: Ball Joint sizing on 1971-72 Front disc set-ups

The pin diameter/taper are different, but they bolt in the same way (4 bolts on the top Ball joint on all yrs). The bottom BJ is a press fit , & only differs from 1/2 to 3/4 ton on the hole size in the lower arm. On the top arms, you can bolt 1/2, or 3/4 ton balljoints.....on the bottom the A arm is different 1/2 to 3/4 ton, due to the hole size for the press fit on the ball joint. L
