1962 drop and discs
I'm new to the board here and i have a not-so-original question. I can see it has been discussed here before but i cannot find anything specifically for 60-62.
I'm looking for the best way to drop the front and rear and possibly switch to disc brakes in the front at the same time. I don't want to spend a fortune and from what i understand later model chevy truck crossmembers will bolt up, but not sure if that is the way to go vs. a disc brake kit and drop spindles. If the later model is the way to go can somone give me specifics on donor truck and tips on the mod? I see from the sticky that the crossmember can be left untouched. If i want to get a healthy drop do i need to use drop spindles on the later truck suspension? |

Re: 1962 drop and discs
You have torsion bar front suspension. Just loosen the torsion bolts and it will drop about 3" or so. As for the discs just swap in new spindles. Many companies sell kits..

Re: 1962 drop and discs
I'd go this route and get drop springs/spindles http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=171667

Re: 1962 drop and discs
Unless you are planning on installing air ride I would stick with the factory torsion bars. Once it is lowered down they handle nice. I think the frames for 60-62 were ahead of the times. They are boxed in from the factory and use torsion bar front suspension. After you loosen the torsion bars, install a nice sway bar.

Re: 1962 drop and discs
Thank you. and if i want to get it lower than the 3" inches it has already dropped, it looks like i can do a drop spindle (with disc brake kit). Any problems with that that you know of?

Re: 1962 drop and discs
I have a 62 truck as well and went with the air bags with a complete front crossmember and control arm set up from a 1976 truck.....overall the process has gone very smoothly...I've got pics if interested and if you have any questions

Re: 1962 drop and discs
I built my last 61 just as Kyle4381 said and loved the ride. On my current 61 I am using CPP dropped spindles, and disks. This setup works for me.

Re: 1962 drop and discs
As I have stated else where on this forum, I would have to agree (just my .02)

Re: 1962 drop and discs
That reply was aimed at Slowmotion (torsion bars with CPP drop spindles and discs). I'd like to see the new stance if you've got photos.

Re: 1962 drop and discs
Since this topic is a regular on this forum and will be as long as there are pre-63-87 IFS trucks and owners looking to upgrade I came across this article:
http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/1963...%20UPGRADE.htm I know it shows it for 47-55 year trucks but in some respects is 98% applicable to 60-62 also. Hope it helps

Re: 1962 drop and discs
Great link! Is there an ideal year for donor truck? I'm sure quality suffered somewhere between 63-87.
On the torsion bar method, I'm still looking for some pictures of slomotion's ride to see the stance. Can anyone else comment on the virtues of the torsion bar front end ride quality? I hate to throw out the old and bring in the new unless it's useless (or maybe i'm just getting old). |
