71 clutch replacement
Hi,
been reading over the forum here for the last few days. Wish I would have found it sooner. I'll start right off with a question. I've bought a 71 LWB with a 250 I-6. It runs , but the clutch is gone. Do I take the engine out and go at it from the top , or do I just drop the trans ? I think it would be easy to drop the trans , but lining it back up could cause some cussing . I'll post some pics of my truck tomorrow. I think I got a deal on it. Thanks, Zac |

Re: 71 clutch replacement
pull the tranny..... if its a standard 3 speed... its not so heavy
auto parts stores sell the cheap, plastic line up tools.. its not a hard task. good luck Rich |

Thanks, Rich
That's what I was thinking , I just didn't want to take it out and not be able to get it back in. |

Re: 71 clutch replacement
Another tip to ease reattachment of the transmission to the bellhousing is to get a pair of real long bolts (at least 6 in.).
Cut the hexhead off the bolts. Cut or file a slot for a straight screwdriver on the cut end. Thread these cut off bolts into the bellhousing. Slide the transmission back onto the bellhousing guiding the tranny in on the long cut bolts. Bolt the other two bolts to the transmission bellhousing. Use a straight screwdriver to remove the long cut off bolts with the slot you cut or filed on the cut end of the bolts. There you go. That's how I did this out in the driveway with a floor jack to get the transmission up to the long cut off bolts. |
