more 292 4x4 questions....
Finally got the cab off my truck.
All of this is for a 67 1/2 4X4 swb 292 4 speed A few questions concerning the transfer case. I have a crossmember under the adapter between the trans and the transfer case. I then have a bracket on the passenger side from the transfer case to the frame. Is there susposed to be a bracket from the drivers side of the transfer case to the frame? Is there a factory/dealer option power take off winch for a 1/2 ton. On the in cab gas tank there is like a vent tube coming out of the top on the passenger side of the tank. For emmisions? The P/O blocked it off with a piece of hose and a bolt. Plus there is a cross over tube from the tank to the fill tube. A 67 only? never seen it before That's it for now. Thanks, Steve |

Steve
That is not the original gas tank, it sounds like someone put a "72" gas tank in it. The tank necks are different diameters to. Hope that helps. Later Willis

Re: more 292 4x4 questions....
'67 and '68s used the Rockwell T221 Xfer case. The Rockwell has positions on the case for PTO applications. '67s had the SM 420 Xmission, '68s came out with the SM465. I have a [project] '67 K/10 Sub but it's not original with 454/TH350/NP205.
Another project is to resurect a '72 K/5 by putting a 292, SM465/R-T221 in it. I have acquired the 4x4 292 X-member, and a Rockwell Xfer case, and plan to rebuild one of the 292 cores I have kicking around the carport. Afraid I can't lead with experience-based advice in this case, but I'm following your thread with interest. Not sure about the X-member brackets. Both the '67 Sub and my '71 Jimmy use the NP205. Good luck.

Re: more 292 4x4 questions....
I lucked out that 69bbsuburban sent me some pix of his set up. I have the right x member and frame brackets. When they swapped the V-8 in they used the 292 mounts.
So I am good there, I am missing the drivers side engine mount. Plus to add another question. I am going to use a goodwrench 292 (74-78) I bought cheap with 6000 miles. That is untill I can find a 67 292. The next problem is that there is no bolt boss for the clutch pivot ball to screw into. What do I need/use so i can have a clutch pivot point on my block? Thanks, Steve Last edited by qksilver; 11-11-2006 at 11:44 AM. |

Re: more 292 4x4 questions....
That's a good one. Off hand maybe someone could braze on a couple of nuts so you could attach the Z-bar bracket? Don't know how well applying that much heat to an assembled block would go down, temperwise.
The V8 Z-bar clutch pivot ball won't work. The L6 has its own pivot ball [a one piece, crimped -on assembly] that's supported by a bracket out of angled steel strap that bolts into 2 holes [3/8-16UNC] bored for clutch linkage about 4 or 5" below the 3rd freeze plug hole aft on the driver's side. I didn't know the Mexican blocks didn't have this. The advantage of the Goodwrench block is you can still bolt on a '67-'72 head to the lower rotating assembly and get rid of the married manifold/head so you can set-up the goodies: 4Bbl carb, Offy intake, headers etc. I would ask the Z-Bar Bracket question on www.inliners.org . Yes, I'm a card-carrying member, Inliner #4101, but you don't have to be. I just feel better supporting that board too, since they helped me alot when I was building my current L6. I think Tom Langdon's Stovebolt Engine Co. sells the Passenger side 292 mount. Look it up on the Inliners' vender board. Hope this helps.

Thanks...........that helps a lot. I want to make it look factory to a 67 and if I can bolt an earlier head on that's great. Gring down the mexico thing and let it go!

Re: more 292 4x4 questions....
Just paint it Chevy Engine Orange, once you get an old school head, and only an expert could tell. OBTW I think the 250s and 292s used the same head. I would have a machinist put in stellite valves so you can run unleaded w/o damage, otherwise you're good to go.
The V8 uses a different width Z-bar than the L6. The L6 pivot ball and bracket assembly is a junk yard item. NLA at the dealer's and none of the vendors carry it. I have one OEM off my stepside but I'm hoarding it for the '72 K/5 project. I could dig it out and mark its dimensions. The bracket part is 1/4" strap steel with bends and holes drilled. A V8 pivot ball could be mounted in the right place and backed up by a nut. That is, if you can't find a junk yard or 'vintage recycling park'. It's 3AM right now,or I'd go out back and check it out. If you can get one from a junkyard get the L6 Z-bar too. I would pick up a copy of Leo Santucci's book: "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual." Essential reading for this kind of project, about 16 bucks at Borders.

You ought to try www.inliners.org if you want more opinions on L6s.

Re: more 292 4x4 questions....
I may have the z-bar, pivit ball and bracket off a 292. I stripped a 70 swb 4x4 standard last year and I might still have it. Let me know if your interested and I'll see if I can find it.

About your Xfer case. My R221 only has the (2) brackets you were asking about, no driverside to frame bracket.
