Re: 72 motorhome info

Yah, it has tilt, a/c that works, p/s, pb (drums), interior is almost perfect, paint is bad, big block runs like new, but the truck is not quite a 4x4. It just has that dana 44 sitting there, no driveshaft or t/c. Has the hole in the floor for the shifter and it has the shifter laying on the floor. Truck is from Idaho, now located in socal.

I have literature on the Open Road line but not that one. The 4x4 is too cool...I wanted to do that conversion on Livrat's motorhome but I was too late...LOL!

Re: 72 motorhome info

I am confused. I see what looks like an automatic shifter. Then it looks like a 4 speed manual shifter and clutch pedals. What the heck kind of Frankenstein is this thing? What kind of transmission does it really have? It will make for a sweet rig once it is all put together correctly.

Re: 72 motorhome info

A 72 truck should have disc brakes. That probably did until they changed to the D44. I also thought there were NO big block 4X4's from the factory. Somebody has made those modifications - either at home or the conversion company. I would bet on home brew.

Re: 72 motorhome info

The VIN starts 'CCE', so it's safe to say it was originally a 4X2. McNamee Coach was an old RV manufacturer that built a lot of campers back in the
60's, I imagine they are long gone now. Open Road built a lot of frame-mount camper bodies on '67-'72 C-30 chassis, seems to be a few of those still around. My favorite was the Travel Queen, which used a C-20 (Chevy or GMC) cowl chassis, like a school bus.

Re: 72 motorhome info

Interesting project. From what I see it started out as a 2wd long wheel based dually...with an additional motorhome body added then a front 8 bolt non-dually front diff. BB looks original to the 2wd era to me. Check how those front springs are attached.
Bolted or riveted spring hangers? More than likely bolted which would be a home made or aftermarket addition.
It's something I'd look at for a project form myself though too.

Unhappy Re: 72 motorhome info

Bad news about this motorhome. It was sitting on a hillside when I took these pics and apparently the owner didn't have the brake set, so in the middle of the night the truck took off down the hill about 100 yards, hit a boulder about the same size as the motorhome and flipped it on its side. I called the owner to tell him I would buy it from him and then he told me this news. Good news is the price went from $1800 to $600. Bad news is I don't have the skills to fix the motorhome body. What should I do?

Re: 72 motorhome info

Man that is a drag. Shoot, offer him $500 for it anyway and finish the 4x4 conversion then add a flat bed. That would still be cool. What transmission does that thing have anyway?

Go back and get us more pictures of the aftermath.

I really wanted the motorhome. I already have a 1 ton dually flatbed. The trans was a 4 speed. He is going to send me some pics of the damage. I will post them here.

Its never too far gone. I ripped apart, and rebuilt mine in a weekend. Now I just have to get at it again. You could always bring it up to me and I will fix it for you. Here are a couple shots of mine in progress

Re: 72 motorhome info

Bob, I can only find the Imperial, Royale, Monterey, Bel Air, Newport, and Belmont in my Open Road catalog. Most of the trucks shown are duallies and 1968 vintage. They may have changed the model names in later years. They called them "House Cars" back in the day...LOL!

classicchev...don't tempt me! I still have one more Longhorn to pick up and I am asking myself WHY?
