Whats up with all the over spray? Aren't you afraid of all that paint running thru your motor. some old valve covers would sure keep a lot of the paint where it belongs.

rage'nrat638, Would you tap the studs with a very mild hydraulic cam with only .420/.442 lift? I am doing a temporary and mild rebuild of a sb400 and won't be revving above about 3500 rpm. I love the paint...nothing nicer than shiny new Chevy orange! Did you Locktite the cam bolts?

i had trouble with the nuts on the rockers coming loose with the 4:11 rear end .. reving 3100 rpm at 60mph,
ploy locks might have fixed it....
yes i used lock tight on the cam bolts...
thanks for your input...

Re: Sbc Overhauling 123 Top To Bottom W Pictures And Commentary

Great quick 'n dirty overhaul thread. A couple of quick questions:
  • It looks like you're not touching the rotating assy, correct? (i.e., topend only)
  • Looks like you cleaned up the heads yourself vs. hotank/blast?
  • What did you do with the overspray on the head intake gasket surfaces?

A couple of comments for your and the watchers feedback and perspective:
  • I worry a bit using abrasives on something that's not coming all the way down. How did you keep grit out of the bore while you were cleaning up the block deck?
  • I'm not a big fan of using taps to clean out threads. Thread chasers are a lot safer choice for the occasional rebuildiner - a chaser is hard to start wrong, and if you do, it won't turn. Get a tap in crooked and you have a problem as it will happily cut new threads Decent chaser sets are pretty cheap.

the bottom end was just rebuilt 5000 miles ago..
the heads i had redone at the mechine shop...
the intake gasket surfaces will be cleaned with thinner...as was everything
i had rag's stuffed in each cyl hole while cleaning...
power flushed each cyl...
compressed air dryed....
no threads or animals were hurt or killed during this rebuild

MY OIL PAN GOT SHIPPED TO WISC. SHOULD BE HERE TOMMARROW NIGHT NOW...just as well it's raining outside and i can't (won't) sit my prostreet truck out in the rain

Re: Sbc Overhauling 123 Top To Bottom W Pictures And Commentary

Okay I have one quick question. Is this motor originally a '69 out of your truck. I dont know the difference motor wise between a 2 piece and a 1 piece rear seal block. I'm assuming from yours it is a stock '69 block with a one piece oil pan gasket. Like everyone else that owns a Chevy. I'm having problems getting my '73 motor in my '86 to seal up right at the pan. Will this gasket you've used work on my 2 piece rear seal 350 out of a '73? And it looks like in the picture it has some sort of blue permatex or something or is that just the gasket? You've got me wanting to pull my dang motor and paint and clean up the turd. Thanks for this detailed buildup.

Cool thread! Engine looks awesome. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the "super duper" oil pan & what did it cost?

INTAKE INSTALL TIME !!!!!!!
i started by cleaning the mating surface's
put thread sealer in the open ended hole's on the heads...for sure the 4 by the carb base that always seem to leak....

i am using the sweet baby blue silicone that match's the baby blue felpeo gaskets

throw the rubber end seals away..for the intake valley...
put thread sealer on the intake bolt ends and tighten as GM recommends
