Dismantle 1984 PU Steering Column..?
How do you remove the high tension circle C-clip that holds the steering wheel lock-plate to the shaft?..
It seems impossible to get it off without explosives... I figured that hitting it with electronic freeze spray might make it brittle enough to crack in-two with a small sharp chisel... What is the proper recognized mechanic's way of removing those clips?.. _________________ Something in the key starting-system snapped when I turned the key.. then the tumbler had zero resistance.. as in no-start... Plus, while I was working in the column, I found the tiny wires to the cruise control are broke off... No wonder cruise didn't work... What should I check for while I'm in there?.. What are the precautions and maintenance procedures?.. __________________ I never did like the locking steering-wheel feature... Does it cause any troubles if you grind off the locking pin, or shave the locking plate?.. Last edited by Prospector; 11-11-2006 at 10:18 PM. |

Re: Dismantle 1984 PU Steering Column..?
There are specialty tools designed for removing the lock plate - they are called LOCK PLATE REMOVAL TOOLS. Saw several a the local NAPA yesterday. If tou're resourceful, you could find a away to lever the plate down below the clip and fudge the clip up. Then, you're good to go.
As far as no key/tumbler resistance, sounds like the rod attachment at the ignition swith down on the lower shaft separated or snapped at the connection. Prolly need a new ign switch. Hope this helps.

Believe me the tool is the best way, HOWEVER, it can be removed with a couple of hooked pry bars and a big washwe under the steering wheel m ounting nut. I had to do it on the road in Louisville once. The tool takes the spring load easily and is definitely worth the money.

Re: Dismantle 1984 PU Steering Column..?
the tool to remove the lock ring is a must since it is cheap. the reason you lost the key function is the aluminum rack (half of a rack and pinion setup) has broken. if you need to use it till you get it fixed you can remove the dash bezel, maybe just the cover on the bottom to access the rod that goes down to the switch. I used mine this way for a long time and it will get you out of a hole. you will need a small long point vice grip which will hold to the rod and reach down under the dash. to start you will pull up on the rod and just push down to stop the engine. hope this helps.

Super! It helps a lot, about as much as it gets without you taking a run out here to actually do it... "Pull on the rod"... I saw it, and pushed it... I would have never thought it had to be pulled... Thanks.. Looks like I'll be back on the road in about an hour... So it looks as though, after it's all repaired properly, I'll also be able to cut a tiny slot in the cover, and attach a little pull ring modification to that rod, to enable me to start the thing whenever I don't have a key handy, once I have defeated the steering lock... It's Sunday, the stores are closed, and I'd like to get that ring off today... I have a selection of weird valve tools... I bettin' that one of them should be the ticket if set to the shaft with the wheel hold down nut, and might work to depress the ring enough to do the job... then it's free sailing.. I HOPE... ________________________ Is it a common fault for the wires to break off of the cruise-control in an 84?.. Is there a secret-cure to prevent it from happening again?.. or is it just that the little flexing, over the years, eventually breaks through that little bunch of wires at the control arm?.. I'm guessing that I should reconnect the wires, IF I can find some colors where they fell off.. then seal the joint with a blob of black RV silicone... Just in case there isn't any colors showing which wire goes where.. does anyone have a cruise control arm wire placement diagram?.. ________________ Last edited by Prospector; 11-12-2006 at 02:25 PM. |

I didn't have access to the lock plate remover tool, but I was able to remove the retaining clip with a screwdriver as well. Starting at the mouth of the retaining clip, I depress the lock plate in this area, inserted a thin blade screwdriver and pryed the end of the retaining clip out of the groove. I continued to do this moving around the clip until it was fully out of the groove. I was then able to remove the locking plate. I've done it this way a few times with success. The challenge is installing the locking plate and retaining clip. But, I've found using a piece of (copper) plumbing pipe that fits just around the steering shaft, I'm able to push the retaining clip into place. IIRC, I used a 1/2" diameter tubing and made a cut lengthwise down the pipe so that it would expand just around the steering shaft. Here's a couple links on repairing problems with GM columns: http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.html http://spacecoastfieros.com/tech/stecol.htm Good luck.

Re: Dismantle 1984 PU Steering Column..?
If your truck uses the same cruise control lever as my '86 (seems likely...), it is available in black in the HELP section at auto parts stores.
Unplug it at the bottom of the column. Tie a string to the wire, and pull the wire up through the column. The lever just pulls out of the column. Use the string to pull the new wire through the column, and plug it in at the bottom. Poeke the lever in to the column, and call it done. Slonaker |
