Re: Stock gears???

Rear gears were different depending on transmission, engine, and you could get optional gears. Look on glove box door--might help. A 72 C10 2wd V8 auto----would usually be 3.07 ----a 4 speed would be 3.73. Now that's the most common build. A 6cyl auto or 3 speed could be very different.

Thanks, HUCK! It's an automatic. The gears feel more like 3.07 or 3.08, which I had in my Nova. I just wanted some confirmation.

Re: Stock gears???

I was told that L6/250 or L6/292 came with 3.73's. I always take everything with a grain of salt, but have no reason to believe otherwise on this one

Re: Stock gears???

My books show 1971 & 1972 1/2 tons had 3:73 "standard" with 6 cyl's and 307 v-8, and 3:07 "standard" with a 350 and 402 big block. Of course either or could have been ordered. Standard gears should not be listed on the option sheet.

Re: Stock gears???

The standard gears would be figured with a 3 speed manual tranny.
Most 4 speeds got a 3.07, as did the automatics. (we're talking 1/2 ton here)

Re: Stock gears???

Most c-10's with 283 to 350 with automatic trannys came with 3:08 gears in the rear. Trucks with v-8's with manual trannys came with 3:73's. The straght 6 equipped c-10's came with 4:10's in the rear with manual trannys. Yet to see a straight 6 with a auto tranny.

Re: Stock gears???

that's not acurate. All 3 speed trucks (except big block) had a base gear of 3.73
the only 4.10 gears that came standard were with the overdrive trannys which only came in trucks with 307 engines, or smaller.
3.07 gears came in all automatic trucks (again, non big block) with V8, and V8 with 4 speeds.
I am not positive of the inline gears other than 3 speed off the top of my head, but I'll seee if I can't look it up here in a bit.

Check your books again, if you look at the brochure books it was not the tranny that got you the gears, it was the motor choice. Every 350 truck I have had and parted had 3:07 gears in it, and I have had them with
3 speeds, 4 speeds and automatics. Every Big block 1/2t I have had had 3:07 gears also. The smaller engines had the steeper gear. This has been true in all the 100 or so trucks I have had. Now this is just my 2 cents worth too.

Since it seems that I more than likely have 3.07s, how is the truck gonna fare with my new 468ci BB? I intended to keep these gears in so that I can still have a bit of highway-bility (yes, i made that word up). The motor is a roller, but I'm not into dragging or taking it to the track. Compression is still a real world pump gas 10:1 to 10.5:1. I just like having a stomper under the hood and being able to grab a few tire scratches every now and then. It is mated to a rebuilt TH350 tranny with shift kit. The stall converter is 3300. And I will also be installing a LockRight so that I am not tearing up the Yokohamas.

Your opinions are welcome and appreciated.
