whats worse than the dentist?

Getting back in your truck to leave and finding the nose cone on your starter busted.......the starter on my truck has always sounded like ass.....i guess it maybe sounded a little too much like ass today when i went to crank it to leave the dentist office. This was the second starter i had on the truck at that point and they both sounded like crap......even after trying to shim. The starter my dad brought me in the parking lot sounds sweet without shims....so whats the deal...did i get bad parts the first 2 times(first was on the truck when i bought it) did i get lucky the 3rd try in the dark flashlight in my mouth asphalt style?
damn asphalt

I agree, don't cheap out when it comes to starters. You may have to pay more but you won't have to put a new starter on every six months.

Re: whats worse than the dentist?

I went through this TOO DAMN MANY TIMES with my old '68. The best thing to do is NEVER separate your original "nose cone" and your block. For most of us it is too late, we have already gone down this road. Anyway, in 'ol Blue, I had quite a bit of compression and was continually breaking everything involved, starters, flex plates, bendix gears, you name it. I finally got a nosepiece off of a big block starter, which is made of cast instead of aluminum, I changed the flex plate and bendix gear all at the same time. I also got the steal brace that attaches to the back of the starter for extra support. (Most people threw these away along time ago) Anyway, I shimmed this set up and everything worked fine for about two years, but eventually even the cast nose cracked!!! I think the blocks get warped down there or something. Long story short, if you have already exchanged out your original nose, find a cast piece, get the brace on the back of the starter, shim it to the best of your ability, and keep you fingers crossed.

Re: whats worse than the dentist?

I feel your pain!

I have to change my fly wheel because the PO didn't take the time to shim it and now the fly wheel is ground to almost nothing. What a dumba$$.

Re: whats worse than the dentist?

Finally broke down and bought a high torque gear drive starter from summit for mine. Been on the engine since 2000 and still going strong, also stopped that aggravating starter drag when hot problem too.

How much is a "good" starter from say, NAPA? (or do they not have "good" stuff anymore either?)

I'm having the same problems all of y'all are having. My truck is on it's 4th, yes 4th starter since 2003. I would LOVE to quit swapping the damn thing. Anyone have a price and PN of a good one? Motor is a stock late 70's 350.

Re: whats worse than the dentist?

on my 72 pick up i got one of those lifetime starters from CKS and i probley changed that thing 20 times in 6 months i got tired of that but i got good at changing starters
i startd asking around and hear that when GM casted the blocks the starter were casted to mach so once they get ghanged around and rebuilt it causes problems
i took my down to the local auto elect shop and had them match one to my block and build the starter for me and i never had a problem qagain so now the first thing i do when i have starter or alt problem on any new trucks i get it goes strait there
