700r4 shift linkage

yea yea yea i know another 700r4 question. so i have my 700r4 installed in the truck now but i can't seem to make heads or tails of the shift linkage. the other thing is the stock auto linkage is going to drasticly interfear with my new exhaust "dooles". idealy i'd like to use a shift cable but i'm having trouble finding a viable solution. anyone have any ideas?

I used a shift cable from Advance Auto from B&M. They had it in the store to. Don't remember the part number though. I had the orignal one and took it with me to match length.

I bought a Lokar Column Cable Shift Linkage and it works great. I ended up not using the column bracket that came with the kit... It interfered with my brake booster so I trimmed the linkage tab down and fabricated a bracket that mounts on the frame to hold the cable in place.

I used the Kugel Components shift linkage from ww.700r4.com ( bowtie overdrives ). Easy to setup and adjust, direct fit w/ no trimming in my application.

I included the best pictures I could find, I hope the are good enough to give you an idea how it works.

Here is a picture from the Lokar website. You will need kit # ACA-1804 or 1805 depending on the diameter of your column (probably 2", ACA-1805). I believe the kit was only $120. Pretty cheap in my opinion.

The aluminum bracket included in the kit is attached to the column and holds the cable in place up top. On the transmission, the brackets included in the kit bolt on using a couple of pan bolts.




There is also a semi-circular bracket linkage included in the kit that mounts on the column shifter tab that sticks out the side of the column. The purpose of this "linkage" is that, with our trucks, the linkage is connected on the right side of the column (closest to the engine). The difference between the cable and a direct linkage is you need to turn a push into a pull to shift the gears. This "linkage" is bolted onto the shifter tab then attached to the cable.

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, I didn't use the bracket because it was a little tight to the newer style booster I was using. Instead, I fabricated a bracket that mounts to the frame as shown in the pictures below.






I have my truck disassembled for a restoration so I will not likely be able to get more useful pics. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

If you're talking about the neutral safety switch it mounts on the column as it normally would. The Lokar kit I used doesn't change anything to do with the column itself, it only replace the mechanical link between the column and the transmission.
