VIN on Firewall - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just recently bought a 1970 C10 that appears to be all original. The firewall has the VIN number and other characters written by hand with a marker. Is this original or something written in during the life of the truck, maybe at a junk yard? I've seen photos of other trucks online with VIN and other characters written on firewall with a marker.

it should actually be the model number if i remember right... over by the heater box, right?

The 10934 is the model #... 127in wb/ with bed
not sure about the 4T on each end
I think the L47 is the engine
and the M49 might be the transmission.

When restoring their trucks has anyone tried to restore this writing on the firewall? I have the writing on mine and I was thinking about taking many pictures and making some templates to try to recreate the numbers, adding a little originality to it. I wonder if it was some sort of white grease pen or a white paint marker that was used, anyways, if anyone has pictures of someone that redid their writing, please share.

Ooooooooooo...I like it...big block, ochre truck! The guys that do the 100 pt. restorations do that. But nobody does a 100 pt. restoration on one of these trucks. A couple of members have threatened to do them, yours truly included in that number, but does it really make any sense? The value is just not there unless it is a highly optioned, short wheel base, big block truck...or unless you are an anal retentive SOB...did I hear someone calling my name...LOL?

lol... well, if I had a big block 50th longhorn.. I would think loooong and hard on an anal retentive restoration.
But the fact is, i am too much of a CSOB to do it, so it's a moot point anyways.

I did it on my black truck, but that was in the early 90's and I cant remember exactly what it was. Some sort or wax crayon. I also used the same thing for them shem marks on the frame and the places that were supposed to be greased on the assembly line like the hood latch.

Thats me! I had all the bolts recad-plated to keep the correct pattern and did stuff like use correctly colored fuel line clips and such.

I took pics of my model number under the hood...so I could have a painter paint them back on after I repaint the beast.
