rear ends

Hey guys, I'm an old drag racer and an ase master tech, that being said so you know where my heads at. I put a rat in my 84 short bed, 700R4, hooker, wieand, holley etc. and it still has the 10 bolt in it. I know it wont live if the truck hooks, how good are the 12 bolt truck rears? I bought one for $25. Known good, non posi. With a locker or posi in it, will it live? I'm not planing on drag racing, just slappin curbs. I would appreciate any stories or experiences any of you have had with these.

Re: rear ends

There are those that believe that the Truck 12 bolt is not very strong. I on the other hand, have one in my 84 with a 383 stroker and my son now has one in his truck with a 350 in front of it. Both rear ends are 3.73 geared and has posi. The rear end in my truck is as old as the truck is and is standing up real well with the use that it has had. My Son's truck had a 10 bolt and we put the used axle into his truck out of a 3/4 ton 4-wheel drive truck. We changed out the axles for 5 bolt units. I imagine that you can destroy anything if you want to, but the 12 bolt is working well for us.

Re: rear ends

As far as stock 10bolt vs 12bolt you aren't gaining any strength by going from 10 bolt to 12 bolt.
The 12bolt Truck is NOT the same as a Passenger 12bolt. The pinion gear is smaller, and therefore "weaker".
The 10bolt has a smaller ring gear ( 8.5" vs 8.875" ) but the ring gear on the 10bolt is larger.

I have had both behind 454's with stick shifts and nitrous, and they both held up fine.

i'm guessing it was just cheaper to use the 10 bolt since it was used for various other cars, unlike the truck 12-bolt, which was only for trucks

Re: rear ends

When comparing trucks, nothing really.
When comparing passenger cars the 12bolt is bigger in both ring gear and pinion. And some 10bolt passenger cars have the 7.5 or the 8.5 ring gear size.
