mechanical temp guage

How does it work, what is in the rubberline? A soillid piece that heats up or liquid? Reason I ask my rubber line by sender is cracking is anything going to leak out is my question? Or will it be fine.

It should be fine. There is a metal tube inside the plastic housing....
