Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

On the positive side: It's RED - Looks like MSD. $40 isn't that much. You can carry your already working HEI with you in case this one breaks down <assuming you already have one - which puts out about the same voltage>.

On the negative side: The add doesn't say it is MSD or any other recognizable brand, thus the need to 'test every one before it leaves the shop'. Testing only assures it's working when it leaves - no guarantee it will work for any extended period of time.
SMALL PRINT - Returns are not accepted.

$40 + $15 shipping (any handling fee's?)= $65. Take that money and buy a hi-per coil for your HEI <assuming you have one - or have a buddy willing to give you one>. You'll be money ahead... maybe even have change for other goodies.

General rule of thumb with electrical stuff - "You get what you pay for"

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

A guarantee is nice. Means they believe in what they sell.
Get them to tell you who makes it.
If it's from MSD it's probably a BLEM; may be that it didn't pass MSD standard testing. For street use, it could be just fine.
If it's made in china or indonesia... it's your money, your choice.

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

I just bought one from White Performance. I am installing it this weekend.

White (Skip White) has a pretty decent reputation. I am sure he is not selling me any crap...also mine is a daily driver and does not deserve a $300 dizzy.

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

I was looking at other vendors on ebay selling dizzys and at least one made a statement that the 65,000 volt output some sellers claim is bogus. Don't know if thats true, but I thought I'd pass it along.

I got mine from Summit for $85.

May not be an expensive one but works for what I need.

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

I'd be a little leary of that HEI. Some of the guys on a hotrod site that I frequent have had good luck with this one so far...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PROCO...60229442QQrdZ1
Made in Australia (I believe) by Pro Comp.
I like that Summit distributor Randy (Draggn66). Looks like a GM unit, not all shiny machined and polished.

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

The gap of your spark plugs will govern the peak voltage that a HEI or conventional points type ignition can achieve. If you have an ignition that is capable of acheiving 1,000,000 volts won't be of any advantage unless the plugs are gapped much wider than stock.

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

...OK...just finshed the dizzy install.

Bought it from Whites Performance...

Dizzy - $45
Custom mega fire wires - $25
12 ga wire and inline fuse - $10
My two hours worth of work - $360 (glad I did not have to actually fork that out to me)

Increase in power...priceless.

Tim

Re: what do you think of this electronic ignition?

It's probably one of those MSD or MALLORY knockoffs from Australia. Not much better than a stock HEI. Spend the $130 and buy a Mallory with all Mallory performance guts.

I installed my Whites Performance dizzy this weekend and noticed a marked improvement in performance. It wasnt an OMG moment but it managed to make me say "sweeeeeeet". Im buying another one for my Dad's ride for Christmas.

Don't waste money! Buy the MSD.

I'm happy saving a few $$ by buying no name from a reputable seller.
