Re: Wear your seatbelt

I know the majority of the time, You can be saved from being hurt in an accident by wearing your seat belt. But I am going to a friend of ours daughters funeral services Saturday. Who died in a car wreck. She was wearing her seatblet and that is what did the fatal damage. Now maybe had something to do the way she was wearing it, because you must make sure that the lower belt is across the pelvic bone, or the force of of the impact can and will damage internal organs. As it did in my friends case.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

my old man knows a guy that never ever wears his belt, i was told caus hes in the military, and thats what hes use to, well, he was sitting at the intersection next to our buisness, in a small yota pickup, this girl took the right turn to fast, and there was gravel on the pavement, well she t-boned him right on the drivers door, he was fine, but if he was wearing the belt, he woulda been crushed, since he was pushed all the way to the pass door, the truck was totalled.

we watched these at work. Inusrance companies had them placed into the cars of high risk drivers or it was company cars monitoring drivers. Most of the people it showed falling asleep.

For those of you that don't wear you seat belt and drive by yourself then it's on you. Remember that if you had been with this guy then he would have head butted you hard enough to kill or paralize you. Sometimes you hurt others by not wearing your seatbelt. People that have children and don't restrain them in a car should be in jail, period. I will step down off my platform now, sorry.

I like the fact that even though he was about to eat it, he kept driving with one hand. +10 for style points!

Seriously though, I wonder how bad he got hurt.

Our safety NCO at the base sent that out a couple of years ago, we were told the driver didn't make it. Personally, I'll take my chances with the seat belt.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

[DISCLAIMER] DO NOT READ THIS POST IF YOU ARE FAINT OF HEART, OR OVERLY SYMPATHETIC [/DISCLAIMER]

while growing up, my buddies dad responded to alot of horrible car accidents (firefighter), and would tell us the gruesome details, in order to make his point about how seatbelts can kill.

I never took it to heart, and when i started driving, i didn't wear my seatbelt purely out of comfort, and the fact that i was lazy.

Friday May 26 1995 10:30pm
My friends Heidi Ryan and I (Ryan was driving, 1993 Grand AM) were traveling back to town, down a rural hwy in North Dakota, When we were struck by a large truck, that ran a stop sign (police estimate he was going around 70 at the time).

At this point i feel i should state that Ryan and I were not wearing seatbelts, Heidi was sitting in the back seat wearing hers.

The impact sent our car off the road, and down an embankment The car rolled three or 4 times, and Ryan was thrown from the vehicle. when the car stopped, i asked Heidi if she was alright, and i got out to look for Ryan. about the time i found Ryan, i heard screaming from the car, turned around, and it was on fire. I ran back towards the car, and Heidi was screaming that she couldn't get her seatbelt off. By the time i got back to the car, it was completely engulfed in flames, and i could not get close enough to help.

ALL I COULD DO, WAS STAND THERE AND LISTEN TO HEIDI SCREAM AS SHE BURNED TO DEATH!

Ryan ended up with a broken leg, broken arm, and some broken ribs.
I cracked a couple ribs, and had to get 3 stitches on the side of my head.

To this day, i can still hear her scream, it is a memory so vivid, that my keyboard is wet from my tears. The sad thing is, that earlier that day she had been lecturing us on how stupid we were for not wearing our seatbelts.

Right now I am working on becoming a officer with the California Highway Patrol, and i can tell you that if it came down to it, I would quit my job before i write a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

there are 100 stories either way...

About three months ago I stood on the end of my driveway and watched two kids flip a Porche @ 100mph (convertable) down our road. My neighbor and I were first on the scene and both kids lived (one walked away). The car flipped 5 or 6 times and rested upside down. I know for a fact that they would have splatted on the side of the house had they not work a seatbelt. As I stated, the choice is yours. I won't ride with anyone that doesn't wear the belt.

Here's a few to think about...

I got stopped a few years ago and given a citation for not wearing my seatbelt. I went to court with it and told the judge that it should be my choice whether I want to wear it or not. He said according to the law it was manditory that I wear it and he fined me something like $45 plus court costs. I asked him if I would be penalized if I stated my thoughts on the fine and he said no. I told him I thought that was a small price to pay for my individual freedom. All he said was "you may go now". I thanked him and walked out. I still decide when I do and do not wear the seatbelt.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

I appreciate the technology that gives us the safety equipment intended to protect us in the event of a colision. However, I strongly resent the use of said safety equipment being made mandatory. For the life of me I cannot understand how riding a bicycle or motorcycle without a helmet is less dangerous than driving a car without a seatbelt. I know not all states have the same helmet laws and I don't have anything against any of you bikers but where is the logic in that law?

Re: Wear your seatbelt

Generally speaking...you are most safe remaining in your car during an accident...hopefully with a seatbelt.

Accident are so random that who really knows.

If it is your time to go...it is your time to go. If not one way then another.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

always buckle up.the wife was ejected from not having it on and ended up with sevral life threatening injuries.she spent 3 weeks on life support.she would have been better off inside the truck.she crack 2 vertabres, cracked her spleen and diaghram and collapsed a lung.all her injuries were on the left side, the side that went thru the driver side window.this happened in september she is still in the neck brace and waiting for doctors clearance to drive agian. The cause of the accident is not clear but the cops figure she avioded a wild life collision and rolled it twice end for end and side ways 6-8 times

Re: Wear your seatbelt

Years ago I rolled a 3/4 ton truck down an embankment--it rolled at least 4 times before coming to rest on it's side. Of the three of us in the truck, two of us were thrown out--none of us were wearing our seatbelts. The truck stopped with the bed on top of my legs. If it would have rolled on over I would have been crushed. The other guy thrown out broke his back. The guy who managed to stay inside the cab walked away. Point is you never know--you could be thrown clear or in harms way. Chances are that your;e probably better off staying iside the vehicle as a lot of damage occurs on the way out that little window. I still only wear my seat belt maybe half the time--hopefully, the right half.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

You know after reading all these stories and opinions. I believe it would come down to the way a car was built. The majority of the newer cars have shots in the seatbelts thar force the belt tight when engaged. Therefore keeping you from moving. and the placement of the belts are at better angles so they naturlly go across the pelvic bone, instead of the gut. The crumple zones are more effective also. Helps absorb the impact so you don't have too. So maybe wear them in a newer auto, and not so much in an older auto.
But still I believe it should be up to the driver as whether or not he or she wants to wear them.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

Boog, I bet the odds of you living with your seat belt on in the car are way better. Ask your paramedic friend if he knows the statistics on that. Please guys wear your seatbelts. I have been in the collision industry for 20yrs now. I have seen some bad cars. I want to keep chatting with you guys on line.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

As far as it being a law, I agree with it being a law. Not on the grounds that you need to belt up to save _your_ life, but to keep you in the drivers seat and your passengers off your lap in case of a swerve or minor collision so that you can keep control of the car can save others from your out of control car killing them. IMO, that argument is enough to warrant the maditory use of seat belts.

Brak, That's a heavy burden to live with. I'm sorry for you and your friends.

Re: Wear your seatbelt

I have been in several car accidents, none of which was I wearing a seatbelt, bent a lot of steering wheels (OH $HIT Factor and weighing in at 250) walked away from everyone with not too much in the injury department. I get married and three kids later, now I wear it all the time, a couple weeks ago I am driving alone minding my business, next thing I know, I am upside down hanging from a seatbelt. (I rememer a flash of fur and think I may have swearved) the cop measured my vehicle leaving the ground (in the dirt shoulder) and clearing 50-60 feet from an embankment, then I hit and rolled. I unhooked my belt and crawled out, a couple of cuts from the glass. A year ago last summer (6/2/05) my brother died from injuries he sustained two weeks earlier in an accident, he was wearing a seatbelt. high speed headon with a culvert in Texas, he may still be alive if the hospital had caught the tear in his intestine, but they missed it for 24 hours then fixed it and he died from an infection. He had on a seatbelt, if he hadn't he would have gone through the dash and windshield and we would have buried him in pieces and I wouldn't have been able to spend two weeks with my brother talking and mending fences. I do not care what any cops or doctors tell you, if someone dies in a seatbelt, they would be dead without it, period! If you don't wear one, its your own business, but think of all the people that love you are they worth it? I'd rather wear it and die, than to be thrown out, dismembered and live.
