New Intake+Carb+Video!

So, as some of you know, the ol' 2-barrel OE Rochester was deader than a doornail on Mars, so I upgraded to an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake model 2701 and Performer Series Carb #1406.

Let's start with the before:
The old carb:

The old intake, post-removal:

Edelbrock 1406:

Edelbrock Intake 2701:

Chrome air cleaner:

The linkages were anything but "Bolt On and GO!" as Mr. Edelbrock claimed, however, I'm sure this was a claim based on a stock Quadrajet-equiped GM vehicle, not a DualJet POS. So we had to fabricate for both the throttle and the kickdown. And whatydaknow, the kickdown works like a dream.

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

Here's the carb on the intake:

Before:

After:

Mucho better, Eh?

And I HAD to take a video for kicks and gigles. It just doesn't do justice to how much meaner this thing sounds.

This mornin' (sat) we adjusted the choke and the fast-idle. They don't quite work exactly right, but the choke is choking pretty close to right. Fast idle is disengaging, but not engaging sometimes, but I can live with that. I couldn't live with it sticking on fast idle, that was driving me nuts!

Many thanks to everyone on the board for helping me out so much. It would have been IMPOSSIBLE without this place.

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

Do yourself and get a set of nice valve covers for that thing, or at least paint the old ones flat black or something! Make it look 110% better than it already does!

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

Great thread and nice work! I really enjoy these threads - thank you for posting!

I'm putting a 1406 on myself, switching out a 780 3310 Holley since I've stepped WAY down on cam. I'm thinking about running the fuel down the back of the engine and along the oil pan to the pump.

FYI, Edelbrock does make a TH350 kickdown stud and a throttle stud...but they don't ship with the carb. Go figure

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

Those poor valve covers need to be shot. They are the source of my Exxon-Valdez-size oil leak. I'd go pick some up but I think I need to spare my old man a weekend or two of auto-mechanic work. Even though I could do it myself I'd still need his help. Maybe for XMAS I'll grab some Edelbrock units from The Zone.

More power? Man oh man.... it scares me. I still keep stepping on the gas where I used to have to to make it go, and I squeal the tire Its definately got WAAY more giddup n' go.

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

This was a good post. It's funny how they advertise how compatible these parts are, but upon arrival it's still some slight modification that needs to be done. I've yet to order my performer carb. I'll look forward to the mods that need to be done. I'm adding a four hole one inch spacer to my EPS intake. That might add to the problems that are normaly experienced.

Did the same to mine but added a Holley. I did take out four bolts and clean up my valve covers though...

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

That looks good MSG (I assume you are a Master Sergeant). I would have loved to do the same but my valve covers are just trash, period. A coat of paint ain't gonna help them.

Awesome. I should have applied the rule of the first three letters of assume. I always wanted to join the Air Force and fly, but the label "Legally Blind" kinda shot that down, literrally.

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

I only was able to get my licence because I have the same eye condition as the test administrator's granddaughter. I explained that I can function in society like a normal individual, even (mostly) at night, so she passed me without even a night restriction, just corr. lense. For the longest I wanted to join the USAF, learn to fly, get out, then fly a commercial jetliner. Oh well. Maybe next life

I sure do hijack my own threads a lot.

I'm not too fond of the electric choke so far. Still trying to get it adjusted right, and neither me no my father know what we're doing, so far when I go to leave in the morning, he tweaks on it, get it a little closer, then do the same the next morning.

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

ahh man you got soooo lucky on that one i am still trying to get mine and night restriction will almost certainly be done to me! i don't really get it as so many people in this damm state can't drive worth a shat. When ever i see people saying how much they hate driving and "i should be so lucky" i want to kick their #%@^&*$ and strangle those @$^#&... well you get the piont. They have no idea what it is like for a 18 year old who eats sleeps and dreams autos to have to polish his in the garge and just stare at it or take it out for drives but not be able to drive it to school or a freinds and have to get rides. So after collegel i am moving out of this stupid state. Ahh but that rant is for a nother place alltogether man you know what it is like i am sure.

Any ways as for the elctric choke i am suprised to here you are having so much trouble. Once you do get it down it will be really nice but i guess now you can se why others like myself prefer the old manual choke. did your dad havwe trouble with the original choke and have to convert it to a manual?

best of luck on it and sure looking good on old red i can't wait to see this truck when it is all done gonna be a sweet truck man

are there any tricks to getting chokes to work? I'm wiring mine dead vertical until i figure out some way to get it to work other than converting to manual.

Re: New Intake+Carb+Video!

Cliff;

Looks good man. As far as the valve covers, get some new gaskets, some blue RTV. Mine leaked so bad I couldn't drive it because of the fumes. Once I replaced the valve covers, no oil leaks. Just get a pan of gasoline and clean all the old oil and gaskets off.

I would be interested in your old air cleaner, but I doubt it would fit a 4 barrel carb.

Yeah it'll only work on a 2-barrel. Its quite literraly an imperfect semi-circle, but there's not much room to cut out a circle for a standard carburetor top plate.

So its utterly worthless. Yet I am hanging on to it... Just bought that intake duct about 2.5 years ago, too.

They increase the combustability of the fuel...

Somewhere I read "Be sure to clean your cowl and firewall of leaves at least twice a year." Pshaw! Its "Pineville" for goodness sakes.. you gotta dig pinestraw out of every nook and cranny at least every other week. You should see my bed....
