Converting to Automatic - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My 67 C20 2wd will be switched over to a 1/2 ton suspention...I also want to put my longtail th350 in it and remove the granny 4speed. My question is will the crossmember and driveshafts work fine with no mods?

If you use a "long tail shaft" Th350 a different driveshaft will have to be used.67-72 trucks had a short tail shaft th350 and the four wheel drives used no tailshafts on the th350.I believe you will need a different crossmember for the automatic also.

i dont mind shortening the driveshaft. Im more worried about the crossmember.

You will need a different crossmember. There are alot of aftermarket ones out there.

You will need an auto crossmember, I have two used ones at my shop you can have one for $50 shipped, if you want a stock one.

I am pretty sure you will have to remove the 4 spd cross member and then as others have said install an auto cross member.

The crossmember in these trucks bolts to the bellhousing.Most are riveted to the frame.You will need a grinder or some other means of removing the rivets.Depending on the tranny and crossmember you use you may need to drill holes in the frame to mount the crossmember.There should be some holes there but they may not line up with the setup you're using.Crawl under there and look at the way the crossmember is mounted.The dustcover may need to be removed from the bellhousing to see the bolts holding it to the crossmember.Good luck!!
