How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

Over the years I've always liked the still in progress looks. I've always had respect for the guys that just do it. I'll admit in the past some of my cleaner trucks were ones that I bought near completion with some of my attitude mixed in. This time im restoring my 68 from the ground with my son Keanu and he like myself really like the the work in progress look similar to the RAT RODS. Ive seen a lot of the led sleds, 50 and early 60's trucks have that look out here in Cali. Even the guys that drive them fit the part totally 50's and 60's. Anyways thats what I wanted to know what paints or primers are used for that look. I'm not sure what it is but they seem to hold up pretty good and flat bases with pinstipping are just a clean look. I figured by doing this I won't be so worried about scratching it up and use the truck for it's intended for to haul cool things in the bed....my chopper, grill, cooler, big screen, christmas tree....etc just in case my wife reads it Any insight and pics would be appreciated

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

I know what you mean. I love the led sled looks as well. Here is a truck that has inspired mine. I know it's a '66, but the look is a lot like what I hope to reach some day.

If you read the tech articles about it, they get into the paints used for the satain finish.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

I did mine in a semi-flat black Rustolium burchased in quarts. Primer will absorb water, rubs off after a couple years of washing, is kinda hard to lay down right, and is a B!TCH to clean.

Mine was painted with regular 2 stage paint. They just added flattener to the clear. Gives it a suede or primer look with the durability of real paint.

John Deere Blitz Black ... cheap as primer, but better. Not as good as a flattening agent, but doesn't cost as much either.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

Take a look at the feature when they did the flames, it's a very cool article and the job they did is awesome. My daughter keeps telling me to do flames, so we will see.

I have thought about doing a "true-flame" paint job over a flat or satin black. When I was a kid, my brother had a '57 VW bug that was in primer and he learned to do flames in school. When he got home I helped him mask and shoot a sick hotrod style flame job over the primer, it was a great look.

yep... I sure did. I do 99.9% of the work on my rig myself.
So far, mounting and ballancing tires, rebuilding the tranny, and welding the exhaust, are the only things I didn't do myself.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

Hey Longhornman, your paint thread has inspired me to do mine with the John Deere Blitz Black this Spring (Thanks to Shane for the paint reference). I got a new (to me, thanks Brad) bedside last week that will be bolted on shortly, then I have some minor body work issues to handle. But the outside will be ready to prep and paint once the weather is above 60 at night. I don't have a shop, so mine will be painted in the driveway (covered, just not heated).

I might try to swing a few hours in a booth at a local shop, but I haven't tried that route yet.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

It's really not that hard... but you'll want to shoot your old junk bedside first to get the hang of it... esp if you've never sprayed before. The flat and semi-flat paints for the best part are more forgiving than real automotive paint. All you really have to do is watch for the tiger stripe effect... you'll know it if it happens.

This stuff looks like the best thing going. I've been planning on doing it for a year. Maybe I'll finally do it some time soon but if you are serious about the 'suede' look that is the stuff you want to use. unless you want to a two stage with a flattener it the clear.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

did the primer thing a few years ago, loved the look but it faded and washed off real bad. did this 2 years ago, its dupont gloss black base coat with a splash of flattener to help stop the streaking affect (tiger striping). so far so good and its a deep black that hasn't faded or washed off at all. does not have a real smooth finish though due to no clear. i get tons of compliments on the color, just has the perfect sheen. Dev.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

I've heard of using the John Deere paint before becuase it really durable. Where would a guy get some of that paint, the John Deere dealership? I was thinking of doing my truck with flat black rattle cans for a temperary thing until I could afford a nice professional paint job.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

I used rattle cans on mine and it was a huge waste. At least it's all one color now insteed of the fadded 2 tone yellow (front was brighter than the bed).

I will be shooting John Deere for sure. The tractor store down the street has it. Looks like it will be about $100 for all the paint and supplies.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

You can do rustolium cheaper, and it is just as good a paint, if not better.
Don't bother with rattle can. It'll cost more and be WAY lower quality.

Re: How To Flat Resto Rod/Pin Stripe

I'm more than likely going with a baby blu, sky blu primer colored effect. I know than mix the different colors and make them flat. I stopped at the paint store yesterday and asked them and several of the old timers had a big smile on their face. They seem to like the fact that people are making it a style. RAT Rod memories. Thanks everyone for your input. I will have some pics to post in the neer future.
