Re: previous owner funny fixes?
You had the bail wire king, i saw the duct tape king when I was vacationing in San Diego, I kid you not this guy had the whole tailgate & bumper assembly duct taped on, he must have used 30 rolls of tape to do it.

Have had 1/4" allthread cut and put inplace of fuses. Also 4x4's (wood) for seat "spacers" and shifter mounts.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
That reminds me....a half ton 4x4 running around here a couple of years ago had 2x4 wood blocks up front to help clear 33"s. And I have seen (bronco) bailing wire holding a tie rod in place.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
My 84 GMC has a passenger side top shock mount rusted threw. The P.O. used a large washer mounted to the frame with sheetmetal screws to mount the shock to the frame. Can you guys believe sheet metal screws? I'll see if I can get some pics. Thats a serious problem I'm facing at the moment. You would think they could at least weld a couple of hardened washers inplace. I know thats crappy, but much better than sheetmetal screws.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
I just thought of another weird fix I saw. I was looking at a 85 silverado this past Sunday. I went to check it out under the hood. When I first opened the hood I noticed it felt heavy and unstable. I raised it up only to notice it was lacking part of the hinges. Someone had installed a prop rod (whatever it's called) to hold the hood open. Funny the the rod was chrome and mounted almost as if it was designed for our year trucks. The seller said it had a cowl hood installed, but I believe it was damage in an accident. The $4,000 asking price was a bit much.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
I know it was a F@#% but I like the body style. I had a '66 Fairlane that had 6' long angle iron bolted to both rails of the frame. That car has since met "MR CRUSHER".

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
I had a 79 chevy p/u when I was 16. It needed cab corners so I decided to cut them out and replace them. As I pulled the drivers side off it had some cloth behind it. Lo and behold they had stuffed a old pair of fruit of the looms in the hole to bondo over. My dad and I still laugh about that. Also had drywall screws holding the cracks in the dash down so they didn't curl up. That was top notch also. Or bailing wire hand throttle on a 68 chevy truck I had for a short time. It was like that when I got it and I drove it home like that 327 4spd and no power steering. Good times, good times!

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
What size were those fruit of the looms. I seem to remember missing a pair a few years back .
That's good stuff. Sounds like something I might try. Last edited by CAP11; 12-07-2006 at 03:03 AM. |

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
i'm torn between the lawn mower blade frame supports and the fruit of the looms....i once saw an old dodge polaris that someone tried to use household circut breaker switches from the house fuse panel for toggle switches.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
I recently saw a rusty 80's model Chevy with a 90's Ford tailgate on it (this was an ebay auction). It was just wrong.
My uncle used to have an insanely rusty old 85 Chevy 4x4 and used 2x4's to hold the cab on the frame. As for my truck, where do I start? -There's the huge steel beam that somehow became the driver side rocker panel. -There are steel plates welded in where the cab support collapsed. -My driver side floorboard is an aluminum street sign. -The front brake hoses were re-routed and rigged up (would be better explained with a picture). -The battery is held in by two rubber straps. But hey, it runs great, hauls loads of wood like a champ, and gets me through the snow! |

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
boatpuller, I'll at least respect the lawnmower blade attempt (some folks that I know would consider that...BRILLIANT!)..but as for the FOL's...now that's just WRONG!!
Also, I just noticed that we're from both from Longview......completly different parts of the country......but Longview nonetheless. Kinda kewl. Last edited by CAP11; 12-07-2006 at 03:30 AM. |

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
When we bought my son's truck I noticed some bondo cracking by the drip rail. When we dug into it, the PO had put duct tape over a large rust hole and bondo over the tape.

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
My buddy and i built a 2 door '55 chevy hardtop for our other friend to run on the power tour this past summer and he bought it at the Datona turkey run
from some dude that said he built the car anyway. the front cap was held on by furinture bolts/screws the wiring under the dash had hosehold wire nuts as butt splices allthread and alot of nuts made up the custom bucket seat mounts and he had graphed a camaro front end on it and there was some real scarry things going on there that we had to fix. the fire wall had a 1/4" thick steel plate that was bolted on with 1/4" machine bolts every 1" all the way across and they made some goofy front body mounts and choped off the factory ones because they were to far away from the camaro frame. Many years ago a buddy of mine had a 70.5 AAR Cuda and the rear quarters were rotted away so he started working on it and the next time i visited him i looked at his progress and it looked and felt very rough so i asked him what did he ues and he told me that he had some sackcreet laying around so he used that Me and the rest of the guys we hung around then never let him forget that blunder we fixed it the right way not longer after that. Another buddy of mine was the bail wire king as well he had a '79 3/4 ton 2x4 chevy truck and just about every thing that broke or came loose on that truck was fixed with bailing wire. He also used 1 3/8" x 2" pipe for a body lift kit so he could run 33's on it he also hacked off a sizeable chunck of the rear front fenders so the wheels would turn this was back in the early 80's. I have more but just cant think of them now, gettin old sux! |

Re: previous owner funny fixes?
I'm guilty...
I used a 4 foot section of rain gutter down spout for an exhaust tube and dump to meet California inspection once. - Dave
