Short Episode On The Soap Box

so, 'cause I don't know what I should before I get into most projects, I did things back-a$$-wards... Picked up a set of axles from a 76 K20!! Went and got brakes, seals, bearings, and all the essentials for the rear. So, last weekend, I pull the R&P out, and the guts to the ring are trashed!!! busted off teeth on the clutches, and there's some gear driven spring thingy, and the teeth on it are missing where it contacts the appropriate mating gear, which is also trashed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so freakin' pissed!!!! So, I don't have the play money to purchase new R&P for an axle I don't have to spend money on... And if I was going to blow a wad of cash on the beast, I'd buy cab corners & rockers... OH well, guess they'll be sitting in the back 20 for a couple years until I get around to blowing money on them...

I'm done, next in line please...

Just to save you the trouble/expense when you get to it........
Don't even think about fixing that differential. You have what GM calls a "Gov-Loc". They are junk to begin with. Replace it with a better after-market posi unit and you will be far ahead.

Generally all you need to do is find out what transmission is in the truck. An automatic transmission will have a 203 and a 4 speed will have the 205. When you get up into the early 80's they have NP208 cases. This a totally different slip-yolk unit.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

It had lockouts so I figured it had a 205 because a model with lockouts had the 205 but it wasnt stock with lockouts.I found a 3/4 ton that has a sm465 that should still have the np205 that I am considering buying.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

14 bolts arent that hard to find in the boneyard. Go find one with the same ratio and get the carrier, ring and pinion gears. Get one without gov lock so you don't end up with the same carnage again.

I'd bet you got 3.73's or 4.10's in your 76 k20 axles which are really common ratios for 3/4 ton trucks. shouldn't be too hard to get a used set. If you do it right you shouldn't have too much trouble to set up the gears in your housing. Don't give up and let those parts rot outside yet.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

Im my area you can pick up complete 14 bolts anywhere from $30.00 to $100.00. I got a 4.10 ring and pinion out of a 14 bolt that Im not gonna use. You can have them if you pay for the shipping.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

I also have a ring and pinion from a 14 bolt that is 4.10. I bought a Detroit Locker from a guy and he went ahead and sent the ring and pinion. I pulled the DL out and put back spider gears from my ring and pinion into the ring and pinion he sent me. Like 1tonswb's offer, you are welcome to have it if it can help you out for just the shipping charge. I'm a bit closer to you then 1tonswb but that probably wouldn't affect the shipping charge too much.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

Thanks for the offers Yukon & 1Ton. I've got 3.73's in (2) different D44's for the front... got anything in the 3.73?

I've heard bad things 'bout the "Gov-lok", and thought that was what I had. Are there any other options for these 14-bolts? I don't really want to go posi, but it'd be better than having another R&P look like this...

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

DETROIT BABY! Nothing is stronger. It's the cheapest model of the detroit lockers since it only replaces the spider gears in a 14 bolt, not the entire carrier like it would on a D44, 10 bolt or 12 bolt.

The catch is you got to find an open carrier because it won't fit inside one that had a gov-bomb. If either have an open carrier I'd hit them up for it. If not they are not that hard to find in the boneyards. You are going to have to replace it anyway since the gov-bomb went kablooie.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

Do these carriers split at 3.73 & 4.10? If not, I should be able to put my ring gear on a 4.10 set...

I'm not sure that is true - I have a 4 spd in my 75 K25 & its a NP203. It's been converted to part time like it should have been in the first place, but none the less a 203. I would think the confusion would be with the 205 & 208 since thay have the same shift patterns - the 203 has from front to back: Low Lock, Low, N, Hi, Hi Lock. Just sharing what little I know.

Re: Short Episode On The Soap Box

In my experience it has been that the standard trannys have always just had the NP205 stock.Sounds like the original has been swapped out.I might be right or I might be wrong but all the standard trannys I have seen had 205s,unfortunatly none were for sale for me to buy for the transfer case.

Although most 4 speed trucks came with the 205, a few came with the 203. I know of a couple mid 70's trucks with auto trannies, (TH350), that have the 205 transfer case also.
My wife's 80 K20 has a TH400 auto and a 205 too.

That's why I said "generally"..........there are always a few that are different.
There even a few 4-speed K5 Blazers ('73 up) but you don't see many.

Yep!

Another friend has/had a mid 70's K5 with a 4 speed.
Seen one at a U-pull-it yard earlier this summer too. (Had to snatch the chrome shifter out of it! Haha).

I'm in the process of buying a 72 K5 chassis that has a 4 speed also, (teeitup's).
