? on a 68

I recently bought six 67-72 trucks for one guy and passed on 1 more because it was pretty rough and was really cover up in trees. The engines, especially the 327’s have been selling like hot cakes. On the truck that I passed on, it is a 68 and the glove box sticker says that it has a 350 in it. I thought a 68 should have a 283 or a 327 in it.

Is this a misprint on the sticker or could it actually be a 350 in 1968? Thanks for any help ……Jason

Re: ? on a 68

Maybe to the untrained eye it would look like a 350 engine. If we had some numbers we could tell ya what it was, HP, etc.

Re: ? on a 68

Maybe the wrong glove box door , i thought the only 68 with a 350 was an ss350 Camaro . None of the many 68's i've had came with a 350 , stock . Imo .

Re: ? on a 68

it was not an RPO in trucks untill 69. If it is a COPO, it could be real.
Probably the wrong glove box door.

Re: ? on a 68

After further thought, I can see how a '68 could have a 350. My truck is a good example of a factory ordered engine upgrade. I have, after extensive research, a Factory Blueprinted 300 HP 327, and after running the numbers, I have verified that I have a Corvette enine. The glovebox engine code is 04L30AC, the block casting number is 3914678, I have the casting numbers for the crankshaft, heads, and the 4-bbl intake somewheres misplaced. So seeing that a '68 C10 could very well have a factory ordered Camaro 350, especially when the 350 did come out in the Camaro in '68.

If at all possible, get some numbers off of the intake, crankshaft, block, and heads. This should determine what this "350" really is. I will keep in tune with this thread to see the developments.

Re: ? on a 68

it should say COPO on the spid label if it is true.
Did you match the VIN on the SPID to the VIN in the truck?

Refresh my memory, what is COPO, RPO, and SPID? I have been out of the loop for some time.

Re: ? on a 68

COPO
Central Office Production Order (COPO) This was originally intended for ordering odd ball fleets cars and trucks that did not meet the minstrream automotive needs.
Example, police cars needed coolers for the tranny like off a truck's towing package, springs off a station wagon, gears off a performance car, cloth seats in front an vinal bench in back... COPO could put it all on one car.
A few deaers figured they could order a factory built hot rod. For example, a stripped down nova with a 454... which wasn't avalible due to big engine/little car rules, but you could go through COPO and build one, from the factory, with waranty and everything.

RPO
RPO is Regular Production Option... any option avalible is given an RPO code. Z28 , 9C1, Z11... all started as RPO codes, but turned into performance names.... becouse the code included all the desirable parts for the given use. (Z-28 needs no explination, Z11 was a 427 powered chevy back in the day (or was it 409?) 9C1 is the police package for GM)
SPID
Special Product ID ... option sheet. It's the paper glued to the inside of the glove box lid.

Re: ? on a 68

SPID is Service Parts I.D. actually . It will have the Vin # typed on it , so it would need to match the vin on the truck , title , and stamped on the pad on the front of the engine , before you have something . However if it turns out to be a 68 350 out of a Camaro , the Camaro dudes will pay big bucks for that . Does it still have the factory intake on it ? Get us a cast nbr off of that and the date code , that should be fairly easy . Just my .02 .

Re: ? on a 68

OK, I did go out there and check it out, at least what little I could check out. That thing is really covered up in trees. The doors as you can are at the moment un-open able, so I could not see the vin tag, and the hood opens up enough to see that the engine is still there. I literally had to stick my camera through the vent window to get some pics of the SPID.

According to the SPID I guess the glove box door is a 69. It’s that simple I guess!!. The truck has been parked here for 25 years or so. I am sure the body is a 68, at least it has side markers big window, correct 68 trim front end, and emergency brake to name some.

The funny thing is whoever put the glove box door on did a good job of matching up the equipment. This truck was white, had gauges, blue trim and had a radio, and that’s about it.

I must be missing something. Seeing the vin tag would help out a bunch. I guess I will have to once again break out the saws, axes and chains and go pull her out of there. I guess for $80 I need to get the truck anyway. Solving the mystery might be the incentive to get er done.

Re: ? on a 68

Since we're covering options available on a '68, I will share my SPID with ya. Here are also some shots of the engine components that I still have left. I wish that I had the pics from before, but I lost all previous pics and information to a crashing computer.
Longhorn, let me know what you think of this.

Hey, I know that this is going to sound silly but didn't GM produce a strange v-6 350?

The Z11 was a 409 stroked to 427 and introduced into Nascar and NHRA in 1962. Any one could order this option RPO Z11 for $1240.00 price tag. A very rare motor to find these days. A total of 57 Z11's were ordered and only seven remain in existance. You are talking some big money if you have one stashed away somewhere.

Re: ? on a 68

so dew man... some one swapped your truck 327 for a vette motor at one point. Have you verified that this is in fact the original engine?

GMC had both 305 and 351 V-6 engines in these trucks.
