Question Plate behind upper A arm ??

My 69 C10 has some rot on the metal plate that is behind the upper A arm. I see it's bolted at the top but not sure if this part comes out or not.

Secondly, if anyone has one of these to sell (driver side), as you can see, I am in NEED!

Thanks,

Bob

Re: Plate behind upper A arm ??

the plate is bolted to the side of the frame.......but its also riveted to the top of the crossmember! you might could swap one out, but if the rot is as bad as it looks, you might swap in a complete crossmember? Its hard to tell with pics.....best of luck, L

Re: Plate behind upper A arm ??

i have honestly never seen heavy rust in that area. how weird. like longhorn said it's bolted to the frame and riveted to the crossmember. depending on how much work you want to do you could either find the peice and replace it or just get a crossmember to swap out the entire front end. as a perk you could also upgrade to disc at the same time.

Re: Plate behind upper A arm ??

Thanks for the help guys, now I know what lies ahead. I admit, it's weird that a heavy piece of steel would rot away like that but at least it's that and not the frame! Everything else looks good, even the plate on the other side luckily. I can only guess that all the years of gunk/grease just kept missing that spot.

The A arm bushings on this same side are going south so will be easy to put this plate in when those are getting done.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. you will have next to no room at all to bolt up a new plate with the springs in place. trust me, I have done this myself.
also keep in mind the plate you are looking for has been changed. the type with metal bushed arms is different than the ones for rubber bushed arms. I'm not sure how to explain this in writting, it has to do with where the arm meets the plate behind the shims.

I have seen this condition before. check the frame behind the plate and on top of X member for rust. crap gets stuck in there and never gets an eviction notice.

Thanks for the info. As far as I can tell, the frame looks solid under this piece. The big rot holes make it easy to see in there.

Can you try to explain a bit more about the different plates? I want to make sure I get the correct one but not sure what to ask/look for. Mine is a '69 if year makes a difference.

Thanks,

Bob

When they went to the rubber bushings in 73, the shafts & also the plates are a bit different. I think if you stay with 72 or older on the part, you will be ok. L

Re: Plate behind upper A arm ??

the diff is how the shaft is allowed to wobble during alignment. I cant remember which is which but one has 2 mating round wobble plates while the other has one square plate with a domed surface that mates with a concave surface on the shaft.
