Hei install question

OK on my 67 its got a 350 in it with points distributor. Ive installed a hei. There are 3 wires under the dash going to a silver box. Pink, green, and black. The pink wire went to the + side of the coil. What wire down at that box do i need? Also do i not use that box at all? The only wires i see coming from the fuseblock is the green and the black wire.

Re: Hei install question

Run a good Power wire from the fusebox so you have 12v in the start and run position. 0v in the off position. Plug tach wire in if you have one... next to the 12v on the distributer. Lose the silver box. Should fire...

Thats what I did, 10Ga with a 30AMP inline fuse. Never had a problem.

Sounds like the horn relay, but why it was wired to the coil...

Horn relay--pink wire is hot all the time-green wire goes to horns-black wire to horn button.

Re: Hei install question

I have always used the unfused terminal right off the fuse box. It is wired to turn off with the key. You can also put a fuse in the wire that you run to the distributor. I think that is the easiest way to hook up an HEI in a points vehicle.

Re: Hei install question

Have you re-checked your firing order? 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 in a clockwise rotation

I would check that first. Also, is #1 at TDC? If you're having trouble finding TDC you can pulled the driver's side valve cover and make sure both valves are closed on #1. Keep us posted.

Re: Hei install question

ok i checked with a volt meter. I have 12 volts at the wire at the dist with ignition on. I have it at TDC with #1 valves closed. I am getting gas. I have the firing order correct Ive checked that 4 times to be sure. I have the rotor button facing #5 cylinder. if i remember right thats the way i have done it years ago.

I am still getting small backfires out the carb. I am at a loss right now.

Re: Hei install question

The rotor button has to point towards whichever piston is TDC. Once you reposition it you should be good to go. I know it's kind of a PITA, but you'll be glad once you're done. HEI is well worth it!

Re: Hei install question

You can also go to NAPA and get the factory style fuse block connectors(spade type expand and lock into place),take off the firewall connector remove the resistor wire and connector and replace it with the new 12/10 gage wire to the HEI and your done.Plus it gets rid of the EXTRA wires!(resistor and yellow)

Re: Hei install question

i put the motor at TDC took the driver valve cover off. Both #1 valves are closed. I set the dist in to where the rotor is pointing to the number 1 plug. I had my wife turn the motor over this morning to make sure i had spark and i do. I am getting gas. I checked with a volt meter at the dist to make sure i was getting 12 volts and i am. I dont know what to do..... I can take pics of every stage if need be...

Re: Hei install question

ok, please forgive me if this sounds like i am treating you like an idiot... but I have seen this happen more than once.
You say when the piston is at TDC on cylinder #1 (dvr front plug) that the rotor is pointing to #1....
here's where I hope you don't get insulted...
is it pointing to the #1 cylinder...as in on the engine... or the terminal that holds the plug wire that runs to the #1 cylinder.

I've seen it happen more than once.
