Removing trim w/out damage

How do I remove trim from a 70 Custom that has upper and lower trim w/out damaging it or the clips that hold it on?

Any suggestions or reccomendations?

Tools needed?

Methods or tips?

Looking to pull trim off truck this weekend.

Thanks,
Thomas

Re: Removing trim w/out damage

I don’t know a simple way to do it , you just have to start somewhere. On a 70 I think all of the clips had holes drilled in the metal. In 72 I know they used a lot of stick on clips. Use a 3/8 tool for all the screw nuts. Some of the clips will be the pop in kind, on which you squeeze from the inside. I am sure there is some sort of trim tool that would help, I just never used one.

On the small cab pieces, look inside the cab and you should be able to unscrew most of the clips. The upper trim is more difficult to me. Look under the hood you should be able to reach some of the clips by feeling around . If you can get both ends off you might be able to gently push or pull the trim off in one direction. The upper door has a screw at one end and a nut at the other that you can reach with the door open. With the door panel off. You might be able to reach some of the clips from the inside.

On the upper bed, you are on you own there. I am getting mad just thinking about it.

On the lower, front fender trim there are two screws behind the bumper and one or two more clips you might be able to reach from under hood down in the “ cup “ of the fender. On the rear fender just feel up under the inner fender and look for clips. Slide off if you have to. On the lower door, at least one end you can find with just the door open. If the door panel is off look inside door to reach other clips. Slide off if you have to. ON the lower bed crawl under truck and you can usually see most of the back side of the clips between the double wall section.

I am sure someone else knows a better way to do it, but since no one responded, I thought I would tell you how I’ve done it………Hope this helps

Re: Removing trim w/out damage

Here is a linky to trim removal FAQ. It does not say what year(s) it is for, but it does detail both top and bottom trims.

Good Luck.
