Factory coil overloads? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have recently aquired another Chevy. It is a 67 lwb 2wd. This is 6th truck of this style I have owned but I have never seen coil spring overloads. Check out the picture. Were these a factory option or an aftermarket part? I assume they are aftermarket because I dont see them listed on the options list in the glove box.

An option,my old 71 C10 had them.IIRC it may be listed in the glovebox,cant remember.Trucks gone and its been to long.

Those look original to me. I have a set of aftermarket ones on my 72 that come in from the front side.

im thinking original/option since i have those same springs/overloads but they are not on my truck.

my dad's 67 was ordered and came with heavy duty coils in the form of an extra coil.... nothing like what you have here... (not saying those were not an option)

Those appear to be original. I have had a truck with them. Notice the reinforcement plate riveted to the frame. Aftermarkets would be bolted on.

I had those same overload on a 72 c-10 suburban about ten years ago. Had to remove them when i lower it with 4" coils inthe rear.

Those were a factory option. I have an old '67 model year ad that shows these installed on a frame. Not a great pic, and lotsa other members may have this, but I hope it helps.

it looks to rivited so it was done at factory. and it is and original option.

faribran the "heavy duty" coils for a 1/2 ton were 3/4 ton coils

Yep they're from the factory are bolted to the frame, not riveted. I just pulled a set from a '72 C20 and there were 6 bolts holding each bracket on the frame.

Robert1970C20rstbukt is correct.The overloads are BOLTED to the frame,not riveted.On all the parts trucks I have brought home they have all had the overload springs so I would assume they are pretty common on 67-72s with coil springs.

Yep they are an option. My pickup's glove box lists overload springs and heavy duty rear coil springs. And yet the GVW is still only 5000lbs????

Thanks for all the input guys. This truck has heavy duty springs listed on the options list, but it appears to bet the coils. The 3 center coils appear to be touching, not sure how that is supposed to work. I also bought a 68 lwb 2wd at the same time as I bought this one it also had heavy duty springs listed but no overloads. The coils also looked the same as the 67.

your coils are OK, they are a 2 stage spring.
Those overloads could be a dealer installed option...same P/N as the RPO option. Same part, just added a\fter the purchase.

They must have been available as a factory (riveted) or dealer installed (bolted) option. The two trucks that I have owned, the brackets were riveted to the frame.

Mine look nothing like that, they bolt to the frame with a square u-bolt and are on top of the trailing arms.

Krue, That is exactly what I have on my 72. They look aftermarket big time!

they were factory my truck also has them and if i remember correctly the sticker says "overload spring" however my truck is the only one ive seen personally that has them and my trade school shop teacher had never seen them before till he saw them on my truck and he had a 72 (4x4 tho) many moons ago

Looks like OE to me. My dad had a 72 wrecker built on a camper special frame. Coils with the helper springs just like that.
