71 Chevy c-10 454 rebuild
I currently have started to pull out a 454 out of my 74 gmc and was going to build it up before i dropped it in my 71 C-10. I was looking for any suggestions as to what other people might do to it. I want to hear a healthy lope and needs to be able to use pump gas. This is going to be just a fun truck and not a daily driver. Any Ideas on what you guys might recommend as far as heads, cam, intake, and carb......etc

Budget, budget, budget How much do you want to spend? All kinds of fun you can have once I know how much you're going to break the piggy bank.
When you say "not a daily driver" does that mean the primary use is drags, etc.? Diff ratio? Trans type? Bill "Broken Record" Lattimer |

Re: 71 Chevy c-10 454 rebuild
This is going to be a slow process but i would like to stay around 3000-5000 dollars on the engine. By being a weekend truck this is not going to be a drag truck but a fast street truck. I hope this helps. If i forgot something just let me know as i am new to this whole thing and want to do it right the first time. The diff ratio and transmission are also areas in which i would like pointers.

Re: 71 Chevy c-10 454 rebuild
Lots of smart folks on this board, so let's start the build
At the low end of the budget we're basically looking at a performance overhaul with a head/cam/intake upgrade. We can raise the CR a bit and put a bit more air through the engine but that's about it. We *might* be able to slide in some aftermarket IRON heads, but just barely. I would expect we could exceed 500 FWTQ and get really close to 450 FWHP. At the high end, we can get away with spending some $$$ on a stroker crank and associated goodies to get up to 496 CID -or- some good aftermarket heads...your choice. We're starting to look at 600+ HP/TQ...but we'd spend every single dime of 5K and likely a bit more. Either one of these sound more attractive? Last edited by Billla; 12-17-2006 at 07:51 PM. |
