tranny seal
i noticed the other day while changing my oil that i had sprung a leak in the tail shaft of my tranny where the drive shaft comes out i was just wondering if mabe you guys could give me some pointers on how to replace this seal i got a picture so you can see where im talkin about http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...mytruck056.jpg

#1. Take the drive shaft out.
#2. Small Screwdiver or Small Chisel & Hammer #3. "Pry" it out with the screwdriver or chisel & hammer #4. Install New seal - make sure you get it square in there and "hammer" all the way around the seal while it is going in - so you don't bend the seal trying to hammer on one side of it. It's not that bad to do - the seal might be a little stubbor coming out - but once you collapse one side of the seal you can pry it out or use some pliers to yank on it.

Leaks at the tailshaft are usually caused by a worn bushing. A transmission shop will replace only the rear bushing and seal if you take only the tailshaft in. The four bolts are all that hold it in place. You can replace the seal yourself by dropping the driveshaft...Remove U bolts on diff. yoke, then remove two bolts holding center bearing, slide slip yoke out of trans. Have a pan ready to catch the fluid. Carefully pry the old seal out, and I do mean careful, I've heard of guys breaking the aluminum tailshaft housings by getting too rough. tap a new seal in place and reinstall driveshaft in reverse order of disassembly. Top off the fluid. The seal may leak again soon if the bushing I'm talking about is real sloppy.

You will get a minimal loss of fluid if you jack up rear axle high enough to do the job and leave the front down.

as with most seals, using a large socket to drive it in will help keep it square.
