Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

Hey guys,

It been a while since I last posted. Here is my question.

Whats a decent price for a 68 4x4 step side w/ a 350? The body looks really straight and very little rust, but you know how that goes. Its got a cheap paint job, AC, power disc brakes, power steering, manual tranny and the interior is decent. I would also like to know how to test the 4 wheel drive other than getting it stuck and then testing it. I'm use to my new truck where its push button, I know kinda spoiled. So I'm guessing a lock the hubs and with the truck in neutral move the lever? How do a confirm it's working. I know these may sound like the "stupid" questions but I'd rather know and not guess.

I can get it for $4000, that seems like a good price for an original 4x4.

Thanks for the help,

Casey

If its a 68 it wont have disc brakes unless its front axle has been changed.

Sorry I said 68 but it's actually a 67. I guess it would be nice to find out what year front axle is on it, for parts and stuff.

Smile Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

look closely at the p-s set up too. 67-68 never had intregal power steering on 4x4s and had a flat frame where the box bolts on. i've heard that p-s was available on 67-8 4x4s but it was the ram assist type, i personally have never seen one. is it possible the body has been put on a newer frame? easy to tell if the frame has been changed,67-8 had cast front spring mounts and 69-72 were stamped steel(the ones under the rad support). it's much more difficult to find suspension components for the 67-8 style. if everything is done right then 4K is'nt a bad price. hope this helps.

Short step or long step? Big window 67 or a small window cab? Pics would help. Where is reverse on the tranny shifter, drivers side & down or pass side & down?

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

I had a friend look at the truck with me. We determined that the Cab is not off of a 67. It's got the plugs for the shoulder seat belts and a seem that runs across the back top of the roof. I thought 67's did not have either of these things? Reverse is Drivers side and down. It seems to be a clean truck but I don't like the fact that the cab has been swaped.

Look at the VIN on the cab.It will tell you what year unless its VIN has been swapped in which case I would wipe my fingerprints off the truck and never look at it again

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

send pics dude, I bet that it's on a newer frame...Where is 2HI on the Transfer case? If it's all the way forward then it might be original, if not then its newer. If it was only and axle swap and the truck is otherwise near original then 4K isn't bad. I bought my 68 SWB K-10 fleet for 1600 but its not running. I have 4K in it now and it's in parts in the garage. I will have discs and PS too but only after I put my 76 axle under it.

Post pics here or you can email them to me and I will post them.Take a pic of the transfer case, the truck in general, the spring hangers(mounts).Measure the length of the rear springs. If you have all that stuff we can determine the year.

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

Thanks for all the replies. I guess my buddy was wrong about the plugs and seem, That's good! The VIN tag matched the registration and that said 67. I'm not able to get the pics for a while. The truck is at a park and sell lot, they are closed through Christmas and I'm out of town through the 3rd of January. I couldn't tell where the low was but I did shift it into 4 wheel drive.

The tranny is a Sm 420, last year used was in the 67's. Most likely has the Rockwell T221 transfer case.

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

not bad looking...If it ran great and could pass a mechanical inspection then $4K isn't to far from a decent price. Looks like an aftermarket A/C was added but the wheel and E-brake handle are 67/68. Try to show him $3200 and see where it goes. What engine is in it? any tow hooks?

That's a nice looking 4x4.

What's that red wire in front of the clutch ped. go to? And is that a spinner knob on the steering wheel? Old School!

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

I just got back from vacation. The window is a big back window with a slider. The title says it's suppose to be a 67. I beleive it have a 350, that's what they say it has. The truck is at a "Park and Sell" type lot. It had $5500 but they guy that ran the lot said 4G's is what he would take. They disconnected the AC when they replaced the RAD. He said it would be hooked up and working if I bought it. I'm thinking og offering $3500 and see what happens. I found it hard to find other 67-68 4X4 to compare it to. And if I did they had been restored. I appreciate everyones help. I'll try to get more pics tonight. Thanks 1969k10stepside for posting the last pics, I might send you more.

Thanks

One more thing...if the motor is a 350, it is not original to the truck. That can be a good/bad kinda thing.

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

It may have had the front fenders replaced, since they have side markers. I notice the rear fenders don't have them. I would bring a weak refrigerator magnet with me, and take a very close look at it.

Re: Whats a good price for a 68 4x4 step side

I guess we never determined the transfercase. The old 221 ran through a gear train even in direct high so they are a bit noisy, but strong. If it is a 205 with the lever having low in the forward position that is also a good thing. make sure the 4 speed you have does not POP out of second. The 420 ( when worn) will start to do it.
I would look at the cab corners at the rear of the cab and the kick panel area on both sides. The rockers are a no- berainer. Poke around a little on the body supports under there too. I checked one out and as soon as I pushed on the body support a hole opened and sand and rust poured out!!!!.
I think you are on to a good truck if it has a decent body, good glass and is in good servicable condition( driveable).

I payed 1800 for a 68 K-20 2 years ago with thrash driveline, wore out engine, and lotsa body work ........still workin on her!!!!
