Well, I just bumped into the board and thought I would introduce myself and ask a few questions. I just got my hands on my dad's '72 GMC Shortbed and I want to restore it. Probably not a full frame off, but pretty close to it. My dad bought the truck brand new in 72 and was talking about fixing it up himself, but he's not really up to it right now, so I got the truck and am going to do it. It has about 130k miles on it and is pretty much original. The main question I have is on the drivetrain. I'm looking at replacing the engine, getting a newer tranny, and I'm not sure about the gears. Anyone know how to figure out the gearing in the diff, or anyone have any suggestions on suittable setups?

Also, if anyone can tell me the best way to get a picture up here, I'd love to show it off!

As far as pictures, you can upload them straight from your hard drive, assuming they are less than 1MB, and less that 640 pixels wide. If you get an error, feel free to email them to me and I'll resize them for you.

As far as the rear end, from what I understand, if it has a v8 in it, it should be 3.07 gears. If you could get the numbers off it and post them, someone can look them up. Also, is it 2wd or 4wd?

It's a 2WD with the 350, I'll have to crawl around and see what numbers I can drum up off of it. As far as the picture goes, we'll see if this works....

Nice truck. With the 350 engine, unless there is an optional ratio listed on the sticker in the glove box, it has 3.07 gears.

In that case, it is definately 3.07's. Like I said, we've had it from new, so I know they haven't been switched out, and I checked that sticker and there was nothing listed there. I have to admit it is nice knowing the history of a car/truck. This is my first project car where I've been able to know for sure what has been done in the past. The body is perfectly straight, never been wrecked, no rust. It's almost a little too perfect to where I'm wondering if it's too good to be true and I'm going to bump into something I didn't think of. Do most people leave the 3.07s in there if they are replacing the engine/tranny? I know my Toyota runs 4.10's so 3.07 just doesn't seem right, but then again, they are totally different trucks.

I may buff out a section just to see what it can look like, but I am planning on going for a new paint job as part of the restoration. I'm really looking forward to working on this since my dad has had that truck since I was 2 and there are a lot of good childhood memories in it. He was going to sell it thinking I wouldn't want it, but luckily I got to him before he did. I'm thinking my goal is to have about a 95-98% stock looking truck, but with quite a bit of updating on the mechanical side. We'll see how it pans out as the work progresses. I've already got the bed off, the bumper cut off (it had a built-in receiver and was welded to the frame, and the muffler is gone. Next thing I have to do is figure out what I am doing with the rear axle and start working on that.

I just got a 72 GMC about a year ago.doing a full frame off with a jim myer rear,built 502 and lots of go fast goodies all around if my wife lets me ! Good luck!
