Towing

Hey all I have a 71 c10. I want to make this truck into my everyday truck. I have a 12ft trailer that i will be pulling with it. Some times with a camaro on it. The truck has a 350/350. What should I do to make this truck able to tow. I was thinking heavy duty springs, with bags or air shocks.Any help would be great.

Will not be towing all the time just now and than maybe 4 or 5 times a year

Re: Towing

it has coil springs. I think I'm going to go with HD springs and air shocks.

Re: Towing

sorry to hijack :tj: but was wondering, is it better to tow with coil springs or leaves?

Re: Towing

leves are smoother towing but normal riding around coils are better

Re: Towing

If you were to use urethane bushings in the rear suspension (trailing arms, and panhard bar) that should solidify the sway that you feel with coils.
I'm not sure if helper bags are specifically made for 67-72 trucks, but where there's a will, there's a way.

Re: Towing

I can't imagine that you would have any problem pulling that around. Is the camaro a show car or race car or something?

12ft? No Camaro is gonna fit on that one .

I use my 68 short-fleet to pull my 18ft steel floor car hauler. The truck is lowered @ least 5/7 but I have air-bags to adjust the height back up when the load is added. I only tow something every now & then but use the trailer regularly for moving other 'stuff' (funny how many friends you have when they know you have a trailer).

I upgraded to disc brakes up front & made sure the trailer has working brakes as well cause a 1/2 ton truck isn't going to stop a loaded trailer itself. Other than those upgrades, swapping to urethane bushings is a good idea & adding a front sway bar helped too.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Towing

It might be a 14 ft can't remmber. I do know when my car is up there the back wheels are about 5 or 6 inch from the back of the trailer.

Well i would not really call it a show car but i have won some first places for my painting i did. (at camaro shows) I buy cars every now and than and fix them up and sell them so need the trail for that more. And for just hualing around crap. I have disc brakes on the truck.
thanks all

Re: Towing

I tow my 25' 6000 pound travel trailer with my 72 K10 with no sweat. Of course the trailer has electric brakes and I have a good brake controller and a weight distributing hitch. Its amazing how little it drops with the trailer tongue weight on it. ( I'm not gonna tow it again until I resolve my truck brake gremlins)
