Re: Gear Drive

Pro's-Accurate timming
Con's- Transmitt bad harmonics throughout the valve train.
Sound

I had one in my SBC for about a week, till it drove me nuts. Still have it on the shelf

Re: Gear Drive

A friend of mine built a 383 for my '78 blazer about 10 yrs ago. It had a huge cam, "Quit" gear drive (you can still here the quit one), and 3 stage flowmasters.

I loved it I would pull up to a gas station (alot ) and everyone would do double takes. it wasn't too loud but you could tell it had a motor.

At the same time my friend built a similar motor with a "noisy" gear drive for his bubble top.
There was a big differance in sound, his was really loud like a blower but still cool . I prefer "quit" geardrive

Re: Gear Drive

I personally cannot stand the gear drive noise. The sound of a healthy lopey motor is ALL that I need. If you run a good exhaust system with the right mufflers, then you get that HOLLOW ring from the exhaust that enhances the lopey idle. The whiney noise from under the hood is the same as "Plastic Speed Equipment" to me. Nice for attention, but it won't make you go fast. You wnat that noise to mean something, then go for the blower and enjoy.

Re: Gear Drive

The old Pete Jackson we have in the T bucket was a big mistake.
We had 3 degrees of slop that we couldn't get out because of the way those gear drives are made.
The old dog bone thing is crap.
We even called Pete Jackson about it and they said "yeah we know, just split the difference if you're trying to degree the cam.
WHAT THE HELL!
When that motor comes out the gear drive is going in the trash.
Oh, the car is so ungodly loud you never could hear the gear drive anyhow.

I know what you're talking about, I like the whine also.
Like Poorboy said, very easy to install.

Hey if you like the whine try a gear drive with a 8-71 blower and a quick change rear-end.
BOING! No need for a stereo.

Re: Gear Drive

Had one and absolutely hated it. The noise does not sound like a blower, in my opinion. It's too whiny at idle. Plus, if you ever have a noise in the motor and try to troubleshoot it, all you hear is that damn gear drive.

Re: Gear Drive

I would say skip it. Its not all its cracked up to be. Its all you can here in the engine bay and it does get annoying. I bought mine used (now I know why) I suppose its a nosiy one b/c you can still hear it even running down the road @ 70. A few people have thought it was a blower, but most people that are real gearheads will know what it is as soon as they hear it. I dont beleive I would do another one, but its not worth the trouble of taking it out. If I drove it more often or it was still my daily it would have been long gone.
