This may sound dumb but can anyone give me a diagram for a small block 350 firing pattern. From the distrubutor cap to the heads thank you.

I dont know who ever built the motor before I got the truck had a way different pattern on there and now I can not get the truck right. I try to start it and it backfires like a shotgun going off.

Should be the same on most Chevy V8 motors with a distributor regardless of points or HEI. There are cams out there to change the firing order but as long it was rebuilt back to stock it should still be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

here's the same info as above, dressed up a bit. Also shows good idea of routing for the wires with ram horn exhaust. Sorry the scan is blurry showing the distributor.

Gear head make sure you have the rotor pointing in the right direction at TDC so that you know the dist is in phase with the cam.There will be better instructions in the FAQ's or a search than I can give.

I bought a truck from a friend one time, and he had just dropped the distributor in, and #1 was not in the standard location. It still goes 18436572, no matter where #1 is at TDC of the compression stroke. This drove me nuts! See where the distributor is pointing when the #1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke. It may not be where it normally would be located, according to the book. Start from there. The other information above is good. I have heard of changing the order by swapping #4 and #7, but the cam would have to be changed to accomplish this.

Take # 1 plug out and and bump engine over with your finger over plug hole. When it tries to push your finger off it is coming up on #1 fireing stroke.Bring it on around until the timeing marks are lined up on TDC. Check to see where your rotor is pointing and wire it starting there with #1.
