Can someone help me with mirror install?

I have a '68 with the 3 screw type bracket. What is the best way? Is it necessary to remove the inside door panels? If so, how do I get the door knob/window knob off? I thought this would be an easy project... I should know better.

Thanks for any help with this!

Jeff, should be simple. I think you will have to take the door apart. Auto parts stores have a cheap little tool that takes the retainer clips off from behind the door handles, etc. After that I am guessing that the mirrors are bolted on with a nut on the inside part of the door. Again should be simple, but if your luck is like mine........

I believe those mirrors have a baking plate that has nuts welded to it that goes inside the door.
yes the door panel will need to come off
there are spring clips on the back of the door handle and the window handle. a small piece of wire bent into a hook should get them out for you.

Re: Can someone help me with mirror install?

Assuming those attach the same way as my '72 then they are just screws with a backing plate behind for the screws to grab into.
The door panel will need to come off and those little wire clips holding the handles on may take some patience as they can be a bear.I took a flat screwdriver and stuck it between the handle and the panel at the top. From there I gave the driver a 1/4 turn so as to create a bit of space so I could see what I was doing. Then I used the cheap tool mentioned above and pulled the clip out (eventually).I have also used another flat driver and pushed/pryed the clip out when I didn't have the pliers.

Re: Can someone help me with mirror install?

I thought that i would do a quick door handle removal just to contribute.
1 this is the tool, this is handy, it works on most cars, is a cheap investment and will make people think you now what you're doing.
2 most of the time it will slide in like this, unless some body else has flipped the clip the other way.
3 this is the back side, hard to see the clip so look at next pic.
4 that is the clip, note i lose these all the time (i'm sure it never happens to you guys) buy an assortment, very handy compared to looking through the yard.
5 cool trick, take a shop towel (or old sock)which ever is closer, and slide it behind, it will usually pull those little dog ears back far enough, not the best way, but works any way.
you guys rock, and happy new year.

Re: Can someone help me with mirror install?

Are you installing a new mirror, or replacing an old one? If you are replacing an old one you can remove two of the bolts and replace them with a short piece of allthread or cut the head off a couple of bolts. You can use the allthread to hold the backing plate in place while you replace the mirror bracket. Also, if you need to remove the door handles, you can install the clips on the handle and the push the handle onto the shaft. This may be obvious but I have seen people try to push the clips back on with the handles in place.

Re: Can someone help me with mirror install?

Greaser beat me to it! We always have a red rag laying around they work great and are thinner for panels with less space between handle and panel.

Re: Can someone help me with mirror install?

Like said above if theres allready mirrors there dont remove all 3 screws at once if you do the backing plate will fall down inside the door. otherwise you wont have to remove the door panel since the nuts are all welded to the same plate.

Thanks ya'll. Can you get one of those clip tools

at most auto parts places? I will go buy Autozone today and see if they have one. Again... thanks for all your help. My door and window handles have a black rubber bushing type thing that really hinders my ability to get a tool behind the handles. Figures!
