Need help with reverse lights.

My 68 was originally a 3 speed but was converted to auto. Which wires are the ones for the reverse lights? I was thinking about hooking up a toggle switch for it.

Thanks

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

I took a look at my service manual and found the wires that come from the reverse lights to the cab. I found them in the cab but I cant tell where they are going. In a manual how were the backup lights turned on? Gotta love previous owners and their wiring shortcuts.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

By another connection on the netural safety switch. To use a toggle just run a wire from a switched hot on fuse panel to one side of toggle and then the other to the backup light wire at back (dark green).

Do you know what this switch looked and where it was located?

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

I did some more digging under the dash and found 2 grey wires going to nowhere. Not sure where they go but will look in the book and see if I can trace them.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

This fits on the column under dash. Gray wires are always for dash lights.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

Jhow I have the switch on the column. I dont have anything to plug into it
Thats what I am trying to find under the dash. I think one of the previous owners in the infinite wisdom cut the wires I am looking for. The only thing that the wiring diagram in the book shows me is a dark green and light green wire going into a switch but I cant find them.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

Here is how it is wired:
1--purple wire from ing. switch to one side of safety switch-from safety switch to solenoid "S" post.

2--Dark green wire fron switched hot on fuse panel to one side of backup switch--other side to backup lights.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

Just hook them like I show. The 3 speed had a switch on trans if it had back up lights. Did it have lights before the change?

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

The dark green wire is probably still under the truck sitting on top of your new tranny. You'll just have to splice it and run it up to the switch Jhow showed you.

Is your neutral safety switch hooked up? You should have two purple wires on it already, or its not hooked up. Can you start the truck with the shift lever in any position?

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

The switch is not hooked up. I could not find the two purple wires either. I think I may have to take the guages out so I can get a better look back there.

I was under the truck today changing the oil and I had a look around and I didnt see any green wire hanging near the tranny. Looks like the guages are coming off

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

I took off the instrument panel tonight and spent about a hour looking and I cant find those wires. One thing I do know is that I am going to have to buy all new wiring. Lot of the wires are spliced into with other wires going off of them to nowhere etc. Other wires are missing insulation. Overall a mess.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

go to the fuse block locate the fuse for reverse lights i think its a 10 amp fuse. if the wires were cut and you cant find them they were probably cut just as they come out of the firerwall near the brake booster , they will be green and light green. the manual tranny switch was on top of the tranny. the wires went out the firewall thrugh a plastic wire guide over the motor staight down the tranny hump to the top of the tranny. the auto came from the fuse block right to the column switch. check were all the wires come out of the fire wall they should be there. Re: Need help with reverse lights.

you won't find under dash wires for back up lights, not the purple NSS... not on a truck that used to be a stick shift.
Go at it from the other direction... follow the wires back up from the tail light harness. Where ever it stops, add to it, to your toggle, then the other side of the toggle to the fuse box, and call it a day.
Get a toggle with a light on it, like a red LED in the tip, this way you won't look like a retard cruisin the main drag with your back up lights on.

Re: Need help with reverse lights.

How is it wired on trucks with factory stick shift? Just curious, as I'll have to run mine at some point as well. Might already be there, and I just don't know it. I know the plug for the tranny is not there. I might have cut it off though, sometimes I'm a dumba## like that.
