Hey Guys,
I Was Wondering If A Aftermarket Steering Wheel Would Fit On My '72 Chevy P/u. I Want To Know If There Would Be Any Mods That I Would Need To Do To Get It To Fit? I Have A Stock Non-tilt Column.

i can get a really nice aftermarket wood steering wheel from a mid 90's suburban & i was wanting to know if i get the adapter that is on it now if that is all i need or if i need to just get the wheel & then buy a new adapter to fit it to my stock steer. column?? sorry for any confusion. does any body know if i need the adapter that is on it now or if i need a new one to fit it to my column.

to do it right, you'll need a correct adapter.

I just put a 95 chevy truck wheel on my 67 and it bolted right on.

The adapter on the burb should work just fine. Exactly what year burb is it? Most GM columns use the same adapter from 64-94. Can you get a picture?

i was thinking that it would work. i will go down sat. & get the wheel & the adapter. i am not sure as to who the manufacture is (grant??) that was my main concern. i wouldn't know who to get the correct adapter from. i knew that some people here had changed to the newer wheel, i just didn't know what was done to make it work..

Well, the grant adapter in my 69 is different then the one in my 91 S10... they looked similar, but the one from the 69 wouldn't fit in the 91... didn't try it the other way around though.

the column on the later ones are larger in diameter, and the flat black adapter cover is sized to match the column. If you use a late model adapter, on an early column, it won't work.
If you use a late model steering wheel, it normally goes unnoticed since it is such a minor detail, but the base of the wheel is bigger.

i am not quite understanding. if i read your info. right then will the wheel fit w/o an adapter but wont fit flush(line up) on the column (at the base). i guess what i am wanting to know is if i get the wood wheel then what do i need for it to work or will it? if it is going to be a big fabrication item then i won't mess with it. i know i have seen it done on other trucks on the board, i just don't have a clue as to what is involved??

take the adapter, it probably won't work. If it does, then great, if not, then all you'll need is a $20 adapter kit.
