Re: just a thought about bed swap

Are you putting the long step on a long bed chassis? There are some posts (probably in the FAQ) about what it takes to make a 73-87 step bed work on a 67-72. The major difference is in the front of the bed and the step attachment.

In years past I used a long step bed from a 66 GMC on a 55 first series GMC. I used the 66 fenders and had to cut down the length of the bed. It didn't look factory when I was finished, but it looked presentable for a beater.

I believe the wheel bas is a bit longer on the 84. Will it work, yes, but it may look odd. You might have a larger cap between the cab and bed, or the tires may now sit even in the wheelwells.

Re: just a thought about bed swap

Fuel tank clearance.

Notice how the steps are contoured for the fuel tank on the 73+.

Re: just a thought about bed swap

I did have a '62 8' stepside sitting on a '75 frame for a while. The wood floor was gone, so visually it seemed to line up everywhere and rest on the proper places.
