Where to mount tach?

Anyone have any pictures of where they mounted a tack in their truck? Its not going in the dash or on the dash, so I was thinking of mounting it either on the column or at the bottom of the dash below the cigarette lighter. Anyone mounted one to their column?

Re: Where to mount tach?

I mounted mine and my son's on the driver's 'A' pillar, by using a screw that was already there for the trim piece. This put's the tach just above the dash on the left hand side and it is just below eye level. I used a piece of "Mill-stock" aluminum and drilled it to have the screw go through it, then I tapered the end that is close to the windshield so that it would follow the contur and hold the bracket solid. The tach is then bolted to the strap and faced out to the driver. The wire for the tach is fed down past the dash at the end of the padding..

Re: Where to mount tach?

I mounted mine on my column just ahead of the tilt and the shifter. The wires were run down the top of the column and under the dash with the column. It only covered up the 2 warning lights and maybe a bit of the gas gauge. I used a hose clamp to mount it. Not the prettiest thing to use but it worked. It also puts it in the same area as the other gauges so that it is easily seen while checking the others.

If you mount it under your ash tray it is out of the way to look and you are looking down.

Try these on for size. As you can see, no holes in the dash.

Re: Where to mount tach?

ahhh shift lights! ah just kidding guys. i got the sunproe 3 inch tach but i tried the hoes clamp and no dice! it interferesas with the tilt function. I will probibly drill the dash and mount it near were peice parts did when i mount it. Iknow drill the dash???? Well mine is a aftermarket pos so it is not really that big of a loss. I would aso sugjest maybe a piller tach with a trans temp and somthing else. munting below the radio i think is foolish cause you have to look down to see it

Re: Where to mount tach?

i mounted mine to the column at the closest to the dash with a column shifter, but i set it so that in the d/od position it was straight up and between the fuel and speedo. in p it was way off center and tilted funny.

Re: Where to mount tach?

like 82c10, mine is in that position but I used a mirror mount on the windshied and fabbed a mount to the monster tach body. the truck is apart now so I don't have a pic

Re: Where to mount tach?

I've got a 3" on my column with a hose clamp, in first it blocks the left signal and part of the shift indicator, in drive it just barely lets me see the signal. In park it's about horizontal.

Re: Where to mount tach?

Thanks for all your input, I ended up putting it on the upper part of the column that doesn't rotate with the gear selector. I had to take out the tilt lever, but I never need to adjust it anyway and nobody else drives it. I attached some picture of the install. I didn't tuck away the wiring very well but it looks ok. A big hose clamp and a little electrical tape and it doesn't look to bad.

Re: Where to mount tach?

Is that a replacement dash face? I don't think it is (as I think i see a washer in that very special spot), but if it is, where did you get it?

tach looks good.

Thanks!

That's a nice looking face for that old then!!

mine's all faded, that upper left corner is completely gone, so i'm looking for a new or NOS one..junkyards come up empty, all the sierra classics have the sheetmetal faces that i find.

Thanks for the idea, grinch4om. After I read this I decided to buy a new rear view mirror and use the old one to mount the tach. My K10 is a Custom Deluxe, so no trim to screw the mount to. What is a conservative red line for my 400 sb? I set it to 4500 rpm for now.

Re: Where to mount tach?

Here is where I had mine on my 91 burb. I made a panel with some "el cheapo" home depot diamond plate plastic I had laying around. I'll probably get a 5" tach for my 86 when I get closer to finishing it.

Your stock cam probably runs out of steam right about 4500 so that is most likely the best shift point for you.

If you have a bigger than stock cam keep a stock 400 bottom end below 5500 rpm and you will be OK. The short rods are the weak link. With a 5.7" rod or 6.0" rod upgrade it can spin just like any other small block.

Re: Where to mount tach?

Yo! I gave up after being unable to find a functional, asthetically pleasing installation. I had considered ALL these possibilities, but I think I'll repeat what I did in my '76 Camaro,...replace the HUGE gas gauge with a tach, and install a small gas gauge in the clock option position with the small gauges.
Sure would like to have it displayed in the windshield glass just in front of the steering wheel. Hummmmmm,...
Todd.
