Ignition lock cyl replacment?
I hate some of these GM ignition lock cylinders! I'm changing out a 78 lock and the plastic relase is missing. This wouldent be a problem if it had the screw to release like the newer ones but it doesent. Any advise for getting this POS out besides drilling? Ive attempted to use a small pick to push whats left of the release but with no luck!

Re: Ignition lock cyl replacment?
It is possible you are not in the right spot.
Sometimes there is a bit of flash over the opening to release the cylinder. I have seen some that the hole is not visible, being totally covered with aluminum, so it is easy to reach down the wrong hole trying to release the cylinder. Take your pick and push on the aluminum a little to the right of the hole you see and make sure the correct hole is not covered over. Notice the slot – the white arrow that is not pointing to a screw. If the photo does not show here is the site it is from: http://buickperformance.com/tiltstee...lumnwobble.htm |

Re: Ignition lock cyl replacment?
No unfortunately I had the correct spot. The first design lock cyl sucks and if the plastic release tab is gone it sucks worse! I did get it out but I had to do it the hard way by pulling the whole POS apart and chiseled the back of the lock out.
Agghh life sucks sometimes!

Re: Ignition lock cyl replacment?
I just had to do the rack in my 75 and it looked just like the pic above for lock cylinder removal. Just used a pick and fiddled with the clylinder and it popped right out. Part of the problem is that the part you are trying to push down to release the cylinder is not exactly flat. It's got a beveled edge, so trying to push mine down with a pick was tricky. It would have worked better for me to use a small flat screwdriver or I've used a stiff feeler gauge.
Sorry to hear you had a hard time with it.
