engine?

just picked a 71 short step up yesterday. completly rusted out, but i wanted the frame for another project. engine is unknown as to what it is or if it runs, not the original engine, but guy said he thought it was a 305. the motor sits so far back in the 6 cylinder mounts i cant get to the back of the block yet. this thing has an alum. factory 2 barrel intake on it. the harmonic balancer has several differant size holes drilled in front, it is blue. any guesses? that drilled h.b. has me wondering. thanks, pkj

Re: engine?

If you can read the suffix code on the engine pad, (right front of engine), then the engine can be identified. Just post the suffix code, (last three letters) and someone can tell you what you have.

Re: engine?

Where is this engine pad? Can someone post a picture of this for me? I was looking for my code the other day and what I thought was the code was something else.

Re: engine?

ON the front passengers side block pad just below the cylinder head and behind the Alt/AC depending on what you have mounted.

Re: engine?

i snapped this pic from a block sitting in my garage.
You can see the flat section on the passenger side (directly above the waterpump bolts).

you may need to remove dirt or paint in order to see the numbers stamped in the pad. I usually run a razor blade over it, as it will leave said paint and dirt in the grooves, making the numbers easier to read.

The big numbers (letter size) will be the engine casting code, and usually there will be a smaller set stamped which will be the partial vin of the vehicle it left the factory in.
